4-star PG Labaron Philon, former Kansas signee, commits to Alabama

Link Academy (Mo.) four-star point guard and Mobile (Ala.) native Labaron Philon has committed to Alabama.

He chose the Crimson Tide after requesting a release from his National Letter of Intent with Kansas on April 23. Bama was originally a finalist for his pledge and has now locked down one of the top guards in the nation.

The 6-foot-3, 175-pound Philon, who is also a former Auburn commit, is the No. 33 overall prospect and No. 5 PG in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

“Bama is one of my top choice because coach (Nate) Oats and his staff have been doing a great job recruiting me,” Philon told On3 last fall. “Those guys at Bama run a good system. Just playing, moving the ball, and just having a great tool for guards to be able to do what they do and play their game. That’s one of the biggest reasons why Bama is one of my top choices. Because I think they have an NBA style system there. Their plan (for me) is just great.”

The addition of Philon is a major one for Oats and Co. He now joins a trio of signees and boosts a class that already checked in inside the top five of the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. Philon flanks Five-Star Plus+ small forward Derrion Reid, four-star center Aiden Sherrell and four-star SF Naas Cunningham.

He can knock down a jump shot with three-point range and consistency. There is a confidence and a competitiveness with Philon. He needs to add strength as he has a slight frame. There is upside on the defensive end; he can move his feet guarding the ball and is quick to get into the passing lanes. There is a natural smoothness he has on the ball with an upside to continue getting better.”
