Nebraska leadoff hitter Cayden Brumbaugh suffered a hand injury in a game against Iowa on April 26 and has not played since.

Brumbaugh suffered the injury on a slide against the Hawkeyes, banging his hand as he tried to get to a base. Luckily the injury wasn’t overly serious and the talented leadoff man is expected back soon.

Potentially very soon.

“So Brum is going to take BP today,” coach Will Bolt said on Friday, ahead of a game against Indiana. “We have not seen him take like live-arm BP since he got hurt. He has swung a little bit earlier this week off the tee and some front toss. But he’ll hit on the field today and I think that’s going to kind of determine where his likelihood to be on the roster for the weekend.”

Nebraska could certainly use Brumbaugh healthy again. The former Oklahoma State standout has appeared in 32 games so far this season for the Cornhuskers, seeing 118 at-bats.

He’s been very productive at the plate.

Cayden Brumbaugh currently features a .331 average at the plate. Though he doesn’t bring much power, he does get on base with consistency. Brumbaugh has racked up 39 hits and 18 walks, while striking out 26 times. He has stolen 11 bases, too.

Getting that kind of production back in the lineup is essential for a Nebraska team looking to close the regular season out strong.

“If he can swing it, there’s going to be a little pain involved, but I don’t know if there’s more injury risk involved, I would imagine that he would be eligible to be on the roster this weekend,” Bolt said.

Brumbaugh did indeed make his return on Friday night, though in a limited capacity.

He stuck around for just two at-bats, collecting a walk and a strikeout. He would end up scoring a run, as well.

Back in the lineup now, it’ll be interesting to see if Cayden Brumbaugh’s appearances begin to get lengthier or if the injury will continue to limit him in scope.
