South Carolina vs. Georgia baseball start time delayed due to lightning

There have been a number of thunderstorms across the country this weekend and they are affecting a number of sports. The South Carolina vs. Georgia baseball game start time was delayed due to lightning in the area, according to the Gamecocks Twitter page. Lightning was detected within eight miles of Founders Park, and they put the tarp on the field.

We will share more updates as they come in from Twitter.

As of 5:47 PM EST, the game was still in a weather delay according to the Gamecocks Twitter page.

The game eventually got underway at 7:30 PM EST, following a two-hour lightning delay.

One immediate question the South Carolina pitching staff will have to ask themselves on Friday night. Do they really want to pitch to Georgia slugger Charlie Condon? On Thursday evening, they decided to pitch to him and paid a very dear price. The Gamecocks lost that game to Georgia, 14-10.

South Carolina paid the price for pitching to Charlie Condon

Charlie Condon has been on quite a tear lately, proving to be among the best power hitters in all of college baseball. Condon added yet another impressive record to his name, blasting a home run for the eighth straight game. It gave him 34 home runs on the 2024 season, giving him the most homers of any player in the BBCOR era and of any player in the 21st century.

With the homer, Condon broke Florida star Jac Caglianone’s single-season record of 33 home runs in 2023. If he hits a home run in each of his next two games, the Georgia star will also shatter the record for the most consecutive games with a home run, pushing his total to 10.

South Carolina is currently the No. 13 ranked team in America with a 33-16 overall record and Georgia sits at No. 15 in the nation with a 36-12 overall record. Both teams figure to be tough teams to knock out of the upcoming 2024 NCAA Baseball Tournament.

On offense, South Carolina is led by their two sluggers, Cole Messina and Ethan Petry. Petry has blasted 19 home runs so far this year and Messina has hit 15 home runs. Messina also ranks first on the team with 50 RBIs and Petry ranks second on the Gamecocks with 48 RBIs. Messina helped lift the Gamecocks to a series victory over Missouri recently after he had a great day in the final game of the series. On Sunday, he went 3-for-5 at the plate, including one home run, one double, and one RBI.

Friday night’s game is Game 2 of the three-game series. Game 3 will be on Saturday, May 11th. The official start time for that one is slated for 2:00 PM EST.
