Michigan State lands Old Dominion defensive tackle Jalen Satchell via portal
Michigan State received a big commitment via the transfer portal when it landed former Old Dominion defensive tackle Jalen Satchell on Sunday. He announced his decision via social media. Satchell (6-1, 300) is a redshirt sophomore with two years of eligibility remaining.
He began his career with Temple, where he redshirted his freshman season in 2021. He began the 2022 season as a starter for the Owls, playing in all 12 games. Satchell logged 14 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks that season.
The defensive lineman played in 11 games for Old Dominion in 2023, recording 16 tackles and a sack. He spent the weekend of May 10 in East Lansing for an official visit.
Satchell also announced offers from TCU, Houston, Temple and Texas-San Antonio on social media after entering the transfer portal.
He was previously committed to Houston while in the portal, but the defensive lineman visited Michigan State shortly after announcing his commitment to the Cougars. The Spartans were able to flip Satchell during his official visit.
Satchell played alongside current Spartan linebacker Wayne Matthews while at Old Dominion in 2023. Matthews enrolled at Michigan State in January and is expected to be a contributor for the Spartan defense in 2024.
Michigan State defensive line coach Legi Suiuanoa and the rest of the staff have worked to replenish a defensive tackle room that lost both Derrick Harmon and Simeon Barrow this off-season. Satchell will join fellow defensive tackle transfer Ru’Quan Buckley in East Lansing this summer.
Buckley and Satchell will join sixth-year seniors Maverick Hansen and D’Quan Douse in the Michigan State defensive tackle room in 2024. Redshirt sophomores Alex VanSumeren and Ben Nelson will both look to crack the playing group this fall, while sixth-year transfer Quindarius Dunnigan projects to rep inside in certain packages as well.
True freshman defensive tackle Mikeshun Beeler will also join the program this summer.
