No. 1 Notre Dame’s first round NCAA Tournament opponent is set. The Fighting Irish (12-1) will host Albany (10-7) at Arlotta Stadium in South Bend on Sunday, May 12, at 5 p.m. ET (ESPNU).

Albany won the America East championship and beat Sacred Heart 13-7 on Wednesday to set up a matchup against the Irish. The Great Danes know exactly what they’re getting into against ND.

“Listen, everybody wants to say, oh, it’s just another game,” Albany head coach Scott Marr said after his team’s opening round win. “It’s not just another game. You’re playing the defending national champions. They are the best team in the country right now. They’re beating ACC teams by 10 goals. This is going to take, OK, a miracle. We have to play the best game we’ve ever played. That said, they have to play well, too, to beat us.”

The Irish have not lost since falling to Georgetown 11-10 in overtime Feb. 25. Should Notre Dame take care of Albany, winner of six of its last seven games, and the Hoyas beat Penn State, there will be a rematch between Notre Dame and Georgetown in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals May 18.

Fighting Irish quote of the day

“She can do it all. She’s 6-3. She can handle the ball. She can shoot the three. Play her back to the basket. She’s got a nice little midrange pull-up game. Rebound the ball. Plays good defense. I could see why college coaches want her. I won the lottery when she came to us, so I know how they feel.”
