Cam Scott honored to play with Collin Murray-Boyles, follow in GG Jackson's footsteps
There’s never been a lack of basketball talent in the state of South Carolina.
Consistently keeping that homegrown talent in the Palmetto State to suit up for the Gamecocks has been a different story.
But due to the efforts of South Carolina men’s basketball coach Lamont Paris and Special Assistant to the Head Coach Carey Rich, the narrative about whether or not the Gamecocks can take care of their home state in recruiting is shifting after South Carolina landed G.G. Jackson, Collin Murray-Boyles and Cam Scott in consecutive classes.
Scott, who flipped from Texas to South Carolina last month, told GamecockCentral that it wasn’t lost on him that he could be a part of a special trio of prospects to come out of the Midlands and play for the Gamecocks.
“To be the tail of it now, that’s something, we all grew up together, we all grew up playing against each other, so it’s something that we’ve actually discussed,” Scott said. “Me and my family, we used to talk about it all the time. Like, hey, you could be playing together potentially. You and Collin could be playing together potentially.
“But for me and Collin, just to see it all coming together right now, it’s kind of crazy because two, three years ago, we were ready to play against each other. So just now being able to be on the same team and work together towards a bigger goal, it’s going to be an honor to play with him.”
With the commitment of the Lexington (S.C.) four-star guard last month, South Carolina has now landed arguably the top prospect in the state for each of the three recruiting cycles. Scott, as the No. 39 overall prospect in his class, is the consensus top prospect in the state.
Murray-Boyles played his senior year in Utah so he didn’t count towards the in-state rankings but was certainly the top Midlands native prospect from that class and with a year of hindsight should have been the most highly ranked Palmetto State native as well.
Technically, Coen Carr, an Atlanta native who played at Greenville Legacy was listed as the top prospect in the state while Greenville, S.C. native Jordan Butler was next in the rankings. Butler initially left the state to play for Missouri but transferred back to South Carolina last month, only reiterating the Gamecocks’ recent success with in-state prospects.
Jackson, now excelling in the NBA was, a five-star and easily the state’s top prospect.
While there’s not a consensus top prospect for the state for 2025, On3 ranks South Carolina commitment Hayden Assemian, a three-star power forward from Greenville’s Powdersville High School in that spot.
Lexington head basketball coach Elliott Pope, who coached Scott throughout his high school career, has taken notice of what Carolina has done as of late.
“It’s been a win for LP and his staff (to land Scott),” Pope said. “This will be the fourth year in a row where, assuming everything stays in place with Hayden for next year, they’ll get the top player out of South Carolina. I’m not sure that’s been done in this program’s history, so it just speaks to the direction of the program under LP and those guys.”
Soon, Murray-Boyles and Scott will officially team up in the Garnet and Black.
“Just being able to play for the hometown team, it’s an honor, honestly,” Scott added.
