Omar Speights join the LSU Tigers football program this offseason after spending the first four years of his career at Oregon State. With the Tigers, he now has a legitimate chance to compete for a national championship at one of the best programs in the country under the tutelage of head coach Brian Kelly.

With Speights at LSU participating in their spring practices, there is a ton that he brings to the program. And recently, the Tigers new linebacker revealed what he brings to the table for the team.

“I’ve been around a lot of ball; played a lot of ball. I think bringing the younger guys up and stuff like that. Providing leadership in the room, showing guys how to prepare for games, and stuff like that. And I can learn from them too. Ain’t nobody better than the next man. But I think I could show them some things too,” said Speights.

At Oregon State, Speights was a tackling machine. In his last two years there, he recorded 170 tackles and 73 solo. And he threw in two interceptions for good measure. Speights displayed that he could do it all on the field. But right now, the most important thing he is doing is leading by example during LSU’s spring practices.

“Right now, I think I’m just leading by example. I’m trying to do the extra stuff, always like trying to get better, trying to watch extra film, showing up early, and stuff like that. Like bringing intensity to everything that I’m doing. So, I think just leading by example is a great way to that I’m going about it.”

Speights reveals why he transferred to LSU

When Speights entered the transfer portal to find a new home for his fifth and final college football season, there were a few factors at the top of his mind for finding a new home. And those factors led him to transfer to LSU.

“When I was in the portal, my big decision maker was I wanted to go somewhere that had the opportunity to win a national championship,” Speights said this week. “I felt like Coach Kelly was on the verge of doing that here. Ultimately my decision to come here was, it just felt like home. When I took my visit, they made it feel like home and they made feel like it was a place where I was wanted.”
