Nebraska Spring Ball Roundup

Former Nebraska Cornhuskers and NFL linebacker Will Compton recently shared that his favorite memory of a moment from his college career came when he had a pick-six against the Georgia Bulldogs.

Compton had been interviewing Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe for Bussin’ With The Boys when Milroe wanted to ask Compton a little about his own college career. So, Compton obliged him.

“Pick-six. Georgia,” Will Compton said without hesitation.

That pick-six came off Aaron Murray in the Capital One Bowl for the 2012 regular season. It was the first quarter of the game and the touchdown gave Nebraska the lead at the time.

The Capital One Bowl is the same game that today is called the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. Throughout its history, both before and after being called the Capital One Bowl, it’s been called the Citrus Bowl with various sponsors attached to it. It was also, at one point, called the Tangerine Bowl.

“New Year’s Day. They call it the New Year’s Six games, right? They coined it that after my pick-six against Aaron Murray and the Georgia Bulldogs. We went up 13-7 at that point. The end of the game didn’t, you know, reflect what happened in that first quarter but that was probably my favorite memory.”

Will Compton played for head coach Bo Pelini at Nebraska from 2009 through the 2012 season. During that stretch, Nebraska finished in the top 25 all four seasons and had three different 10-win seasons. That was also the period of time that saw the Cornhuskers transition from the Big 12 to the Big 10.

“I could barely feel my body. I read this screen, picked it off, took it to the house. Probably ran — like yourself — a 4.2 on the way to the endzone,” Compton said.

“And that was my most hyped moment, probably ever, playing football.”

In the end, Aaron Murray may have had the last laugh. Georgia won the game 45-31 and Murray was named the MVP of the game. Still, for Will Compton, that pick-six is a phenomenal memory to be able to hold onto.

That game was Will Compton’s last as a member of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. From there, he went on to become an undrafted free agent in the NFL. He spent time with Washington, Tennessee, New Orleans, and Oakland/Las Vegas. Compton would then retire from the NFL in 2023.

Along with former Michigan Wolverines and Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Taylor Lewan, he’s a host of the Bussin’ With The Boys podcast.
