South Carolina offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains just wrapped up spring practices with the Gamecocks a few weeks ago. The Garnet shut out the Black team 17-0 to cap off the spring session. But there’s always work to be done as a college football coach heading into the fall. With Loggains being an offensive coach, of course he hates dealing with the disruptions that defensive players cause in practices. And he let that be known a few weeks ago in a press conference with reporters, when he joked that defensive players ‘are terrorists.’

A reporter asked Loggains if he wanted to get certain looks from the defensive side of the ball in order to get certain things on tape. “This is the second question you’ve asked about this. Defensive guys are terrorists. Alright. They’re trying to win every drill. They’re trying to play every drill. That’s just what they do,” Loggains began.

“And every team I’ve ever been a part of that’s what it is. There’s a saying, emotion does not fuel execution. So, the games are so different. Defensive guys want to make a play and it’s like the whistle is blown and they’re going crazy on the sidelines. They’re like a women’s softball team over there. Like chanting and stuff. And I mean, that’s where their enthusiasm comes from. And offense comes back to, it takes 11 guys to gain four yards on a run. It takes one prick on defense to make a tackle or a TFL. And jump a gap….” he explained.

The South Carolina offensive coordinator did not that there are certain rules that both sides have to follow in spring games and certain settings.

“But there are rules of engagement that you do play with in these type games. And you start drafting teams. The chemistry on offense sometimes. Defense…this is what I used to get frustrated about in the NFL. Defense…preseason, offensive coaches hate preseason football. Because you’ve gotta prepare. You’ve gotta watch tape on them. You’ve gotta have their blitzes. Because if you don’t, someone gets hurt. The defense can show up tomorrow and play a game and say, oh cover four or cover one. Play your roles. So, it’s different. The preparation is different from both sides. So, there are rules of engagement that you do talk about,” Loggains noted.

Loggains will have a number of dynamic weapons at his disposal this fall such as quarterback LaNorris Sellers. In their spring game, he completed 9 of 11 passes for 70 yards and rushed five times for 38 yards. He’ll also have wide receiver Nyckoles Harbor at his disposal, one of the fastest people on the planet. The world-class track and field athlete was busy juggling his time this spring between the track and the football field.
