Steve Spurrier is happy his son, Scott Spurrier, is doing good work with Bob Stoops on the Arlington Renegades coaching staff. While appearing on WADE in Tampa Bay this week, the former Florida Gators and South Carolina Gamecocks coach talked about his son coaching special teams for the Renegades.

“Does a real good job,” Steve Spurrier said about his son. “Coach Stoops is really pleased with what he’s done with all the special teams.”

Spurrier also talked about the United Football League (UFL) and his son’s future. “You never know how long those spring leagues are going to last, but hopefully Scott can hook on somewhere in Florida or maybe another NFL team or wherever,” he said. “He is dedicated to learning special teams play as much as he could for about the last 10 years when he was in South Carolina with us.

“I said ‘Go hang out with Coach Joe Robinson and our special teams coordinator because that’s an area a lot of coaches don’t go into. They want to do offense or defense. Special teams some people say it’s one-third of the game, so you got to have good coaches there also.”

Scott Spurrier has been on the Rendages coaching staff since 2020 and helped the team win the XFL title last year. He also worked with his father at South Carolina and the Orlando Apollos of the Alliance of American Football in 2019.

Steve Spurrier believes in Florida Gators despite struggles

Steve Spurrier is also hoping for good things for the Gators. In the same interview, the national champion head coach expressed his confidence in the team and head coach Billy Napier.

“Well, we’ve not had a winning season in two years, so that’s not a good start. He feels like, everybody feels like we’ve got a little bit better team this year. We’ve picked up some guys. Of course, we’ve lost some guys, but again, if we can get off to a really good start,” Spurrier said.

“We open up with Miami, I think at 3:30 on August 31st there. If we get off to a good start, build some confidence, Graham (Mertz) is ready to go and (DJ) Lagway — the backup kid — he’s a talented player. We’re in good shape at quarterback, hopefully our defense will be much improved. We can get off to a good start, have a winning season and win a bowl game, that’s what I’m predicting. (A) winning season and win a bowl game and start heading in the right direction.”
