Mcdowell high school football has blown my mind forever. How in the heck can you have a school that has 1800 kids .... the whole dang co goes to one high school and you can’t find enough guys to play a respectable game of football ??? And it’s not like the co is full of preppy city boi’s. I just don’t understand that school with football. Blows my mind maybe more than any school around

They always have a few skill players, but no line on either side. They were small and outmanned in the trenches. Get the bigs to play is my only guess. They don’t seem to have that one home run hitter this year either.

Programs are built well before the kids reach HS. I think that's the problem with McDowell.

I would AJ e to agree with that. Yancey County was involved with their Youth League Program for a few years, and may still be as far as I know, but it was virtually a train wreck. Parents and coaches could not get along at all, and constant issues at every game almost. Hopefully Coach Brewer can get involved and help the entire system. I do believe he is a good coach but has a lot of issues to iron out at this time.

McDowell has been back into the rec leagues with Mitchell, Avery, and Yancey counties again the last 2 years, (well and actually Watauga County too who is actually over the league even though they have not had enough for a team the last 2 years due to Mt Vernon church that was Satterfield's church as well as a lot of the App coaches having their own football league). McDowell has a population nearly equal to Mitchell, Avery, and Yancey counties combined but still only have 2 teams per age group even at this age when you normally have more kids than you will later on. They're actually pretty competitive with the tri county teams at this age, but what seems to happen is their talent seems to drop off and quit participating as they get on to high school. I know there has previously been a lot of hatred and feuding between communities such as Nebo, Glenwood, Old Fort, and West Marion and such which gets feelings hurt and causes a lot of kids not to play well with each other. It's hard to figure what the problem is, but with 4 times the kids to pick from as Mitchell our best teams should not beat their worst teams. I don't feel like they could ever be a serious contender in the 4a playoff picture, but they should be able to be a top end team in the WNC area. I think Brewer will do a good job if they give him a chance, because I think they need to play mountain football and be efficient at it to to be successful, just dont think the spread is their answer to compete with the big schools.
