It isn’t that they don’t build there program any more like Havelock Tarboro and other good programs in the area. It starts in the Pee Wee league and middle school you can’t just show up your freshman year any more and think your going to do work. These schools put in work to keep programs winning year after year and you have to get the kids to buy in to it a few more years of getting the crap beat out you will kill a program. They will need someone that wants to put in work and understand the community.
Spot on. During the 90's and 2000's the Bears had a a program builder (Coach Williams). A few years after he left it all went to hell. Now very few kids even try out for Bear football. The new coach has his hands full to try to turn this train wreck around. Agree that programs are built starting in the pee wee and middle schools; it's too late to start at the JV level.

If they can't get some decent QB play, might be more of the same next year. Unfortunately, I don't see a Brett Wiliams, Josh Taylor or Mike Hughes type of player behind center for the Bears in 2019.

Mike Hughes, that young man was unbelievable when he was at New Bern. He could pretty much take over a game by himself at the QB position. Glad to see that he made it to the professional level. Too bad the Carolina Panthers couldn't have drafted him instead of Minnesota.

Many don't know this but he also punted and held for extra points. He played WR and CB his sophomore year before moving to QB for his JR and SR years. I'm very close with him and his family, love them.

What are you talking about?? Are you NH guy or NB guy now? New bern was very very very good when Mike Hughes and others were there a few years ago.

LoL your right. Got my teams mixed up. What ever happened to Michael bowman. Kid was a animal

Still around Havelock working hard supporting his brother, As family should. They were both very very good. Glad he put stuff behind him and on the right track he was one of the great ones that could have come out of HHS. They both came up through the program building through Pee Wee.

StalSwo, or is it SWO05, Let me set the record straight concerning me. I am a New Bern guy- played for Coach Thrift in the early 70's. I DID live in Wilmington but left in 1980 after graduating UNC-W; have not been back since. I don't give a hoot about any school in the Wilmington area. You have got me confused with some other guy just as SWO05 did earlier in the season. By the way I have not lived in NC since 1980 but go back to New Bern a couple of time a year to visit family. You are right Mike Hughes was a really good player for NB just as many others in the 1990's and 2000's. Glad Mike took advantage of a second chance after whatever happened during his time at UNC. Wish him a 100% recovery and a long career in the NFL. By the way if you are SWO05 (STAL05 your writing is very similar if not identical to SWO05) man up and say it-why do you need two handles on a friggin high school sports site?

My son had the opportunity to play AAU basketball with Mike Hughes years ago when they both played for the New Bern Tarheels. That team was definitely tough to beat on the AAU circuit. Miller Mills played on that team as well.

Miller was a good basketball player for the Bears.
