No - they didn't have enough depth, that was apparent when you look at how the 2nd half of their season went compared to the first half. They had some great starters but not much behind them.

I agree about the depth but not sure it would matter with this schedule. They'd probably finish 9-3 (6-2) with this schedule and possibly be in the SEC title game.

I'd say the depth would come in to play and they'd lose the Louisville game. I also don't they were equipped to chase around Jackson.

No. We've proven only that we can lose games we shouldn't an win an equal number of toss ups. A good QB is also necessary. Know where we can find one?

Yes. That team competed to the teeth against great teams, and beat some of them. They wouldn't need depth in this years east.

If they didn't win the east this year, they'd be second for sure. It's no question.

That team also lost to a pretty bad miss state team. Might of been the worst atmosphere game I have ever been to in commonwealth. After coming off the uofl, lsu, and Florida with gameday, dreary weather, mentally exhausted fans and team, and a terrible game time led to that one.

It takes not only a good team to win a division, but some good bounces also.

Yea and state had a killer running back that year. Can't remember his name. Bad timing on that one.

They had two I believe. Dixon and Jones if I'm not mistaken. I was at that game and agree with the poster above...it was miserable.

Yea that's right. Dixon was a beast. Ran all over us IIRC. Believe he was one of the best in the nation that year.

Let's look at our schedule then.

2007
@ Ark - Win
@ SC - Loss
LSU - Win
FL - Loss
MSU - Loss
@UGA - Loss
@ Vandy - Win
UT - Loss

If 2007 team played that schedule in 2016, how would they do?

@ Ark - Win?
@ SC - Win
LSU - Win
FL - Win?
MSU - Win
@UGA - Win?
@ Vandy - Win
UT - Win?

Seems crazy, but I'm not convinced that the 2007 team couldn't win every game if they played the 2016 version of those teams this year. That team lost 3 SEC home games!

If you gave them all 3 wins they already had, then you might also be able to add home wins over MSU, FL, and UT. If you drop one of those, and replace it with a road win over SC, or Georgia, you are still at 6-2.

If 2007 team played the 2016 schedule:

@ FL - Win
SC - Win
@ Bama - Loss
Vandy - Win
MSU - Win
@UT - Loss
@Missouri - Win
UGA - Win

That would be 6-2, if we split with UT/FL on the road. If we lose to both, then we drop to 5-3.
In short, if you had the 2007 team play this schedule, I think we win all 4 SEC home games and at least 1 (Missouri) on the road.

It would still be the best SEC record since the 1970s (right?) and would feel like a championship to those of us who long for 4-4.

Dixon (a four star we never heard of) is the one that killed us, over 200 yards rushing IIRC-------but the one long TD pass down the middle is what beat us, wide open-------the game that would have gotten Brown fired, IF not for his buyout, about a tenth of today crazy figure.. Dream on, not that i think we should start over this year, JMO.

All our fans assumed we had a much more talented team but I think we had three four stars playing all from Kentucky, (one on offense) while they had over 20 that had committed the previous four years--------the amazing thing to me was that ALL of theirs were from their home state of Mississippi.

Brooks worked wonders with his support from UK, and Joker was a big part of that, just not able to work the same magic as a HC with the dismal support mitch gave both of them.

Dream on.

Our "great" (and they were great) offense had ONE four star starting, zero 5.7s, one 5.6, two 5.5s and two two stars starting (Lyons a 4.9) at the "skill"positions with the OL averaging a lofty 5.2 for the five positions Depth was nonexistent, when 5.6 Little (greatly underrated) went down we replaced himwith two star Dixon.

Didn't do the 07 teams but in 10 the SEC teams we played (minus Vandy, zero) AVERAGED 38 four star commits oveR the four previous years--------plus FIVE STARS.

The 06 team was 4-4 in the SEC and I think we had one or two other break even season in those THIRTY NINE years..

IF we go bowling, wihch many think is possible, we will either finish 4-4 in the SEC or better yet to me) beat UL's best team.i

That "pretty bad" Mississippi State team finished 8-5/4-4...same overall and better league record than the Cats that year.

.i

The "stars" were pretty irrelevant. That was a senior-laden offense that had grown together.

To think that in a softer SEC East, that the 2007 team couldn't add 2 more wins, really sells that group short.

In short, we lost to 5 teams: South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi State, Florida, and Tennessee. Undeniably, 4 of those teams (all but UT) are weaker this year than they were that year. You could argue that each of those 4 teams is dramatically weaker than it was in 2007.

The OP has brought up an interesting topic, and one that I think many are missing the boat on. The 2007 team was our best in the last 30 years, and it played in a considerably stronger East division than the one we play in now.

If we beat MSU and finish 3-5 in conference; or even better, beat MSU and Missouri and go 4-4, then the reality of the discrepancy between the quality of the conference will be burning brightly.

Then, perhaps the question should be: How would the 2016 team fare against the 2007 team?

They were okay.

They lost to LSU (at home) 45-0.

Their best wins were over Auburn (9-3) and Alabama (7-6/4-4), before they returned to being Alabama.

Our common opponents were LSU, Arkansas, Tennessee, and South Carolina.
We went 2-2 against those 4 teams, and MSU went 0-4.

But, they beat us, and that's what mattered most.

We lost to MSU because we were flat, and injured.

I think this thread becomes even more relevant after last night's win.
