but... what do they expect to be changed? I don't care how much marching anyone does... even if you bring the attention to everyone, there's not anything they can do to change someones bigoted opinion. I just don't see the point in this..

It's about an Administration that doesn't respondwith action to correct the misconduct.I think peoplewant to dismiss the action as an isolateincident. But the Adminstration should be held accountable.

As long as they don't do anything physically damaging to the students, I think it's out of their hands. I really don't see anything that UA could do about the incident.

I expect the University to say that this type of behavior will not be tolerated. All to often people dismiss bad behavior instead of taking a stand. You (general)should not allow racial comments to be expressed in your presence. You have the power to make a difference. So take a stand and make a difference.

Buddy... I hear you... I really do, but I just can't cosign on this. You say you can make a difference, but from the sounds of it all that will occur from it is public censorship and that's not something I stand for. When you say that type of behavior shouldn't be tolerated by the university, I don't know what you could expect them to do as "punishment"... Give them a firm talking to? Suspend or even kick them out? If it gets to that point then that's absolutely ridiculous. No matter what they say to the students, their words cannot keep them out of the university and continue getting their education.<div>
</div><div>A lot of times with subjects like this I always hear that people need to take a stand, change needs to be made, and things like this should not be tolerated. What's the solution? I keep hearing cries for action, but there are no viable solution that doesn't make the country or private organizations look like a dictatorship. Some battles are worth fighting.Suppressingpeople's opinions and "forcing" them to accept people isn't worth it to me.</div>

I like having discussions of differing opinions at times, but whenever people tend to give me half assed statements like that, it really makes me take them less seriously. First of all, consent and condoning are completely different from just growing thicker skin and not giving a 17 what other people think of them. I've had quite a few racial slurs thrown at me to now and I'm only 23 and I can expect to hear many more as I continue to grow older. Who gives a 17? I'm not the only person (obviously) that's dealt with racism nor will I be the last. It's not a pretty thing, but that reflects worse on the person that exudes those types of behaviors than it does on me simply because they look less of me because I may be darker than them.<div>
</div><div>As far as I know, freedom of speech overrules this situation because 1. Alabama is a public university, 2. this did not happen in a working environment, and 3. nothing physical or extremely hostile transpired (which is specifically stated in their handbook) that would provoke Alabama to do something of drastic nature. I may not like the fact that a lot of peple can say things like this, but I like the fact more that I can say whatever I want to and can't be prosecuted on my words alone because we're one of a few countries that have that right and I take pride in that. Whenever I see the state of other countries that have to worry about censorship and see some of the penalties they have to deal with then suddenly dealing with people with differing opinions becomes a bit easier. Send the individual a letter and tell them how you didn't like their behavior if it means that much to you. Maybe your words will touch them and make them consider changing.</div>
