I agree murphy should be in 1AA but you can't knock their schedule over the years.if Mitchell played pisgah swain and Franklin every year they would lose more than they would win.Franklin is down this year but most years they would spank Mitchell and i don't think Mitchell has ever beat swain

A school with 470 Amd is not going to be in 1AA with school 500+ in fact last year with 510 they were one of the smallest in the 1AA. And yes Franklin is down this year and in the pass probably would have beaten Mitchell but Mitchell sure didn't know that when they signed the contract infact wanted to play them last year. As for Swain Mitchell used to play them in regular season and I don't remember if they ever did when one the last game of those games Heath shuler had to score a last minute TD to win , back then Mitchell was much better at defense then offense and Heath said that it was the hardest he was hit all year. That year was the first year the state started playing the championships at the colleges and a bunch of us form Mitchell county went to watch it and sat with the Swain crowd. I just like to watch a good football game my brothers and I went and watched Murphy & Swain on a cold night in a playoff game when Carl Pickens played for Murphy. But you know the pass is the pass and all this programs today are different from years ago.

Mitchell won a lone game against Swain in 95. Pisgah used to be in Mitchell's conference, and was pretty equal most years. I'll give you Franklin. Granted, Murphy has the history that Mitchell doesn't, but who would've won a game 20 years ago doesn't mean bunk this year. During the Travise Pitman era, Mitchell has been to 3 straight western finals, 1 state championship, compiling a 56-13 record in 5 years. In the same time frame Murphy has went to 2 straight western finals, won a state championship, and compiled and wait for it, 56-13 record. Murphy's schedule has been no tougher than Mitchell's in the last half decade.
Well just cool your jets. No use to get upset. Maybe they did, I was told by someone in the system that there was contract issues in 2017. If I was told wrong okay, I'm glad you know all the in and outs of a county you don't live in good for you. But they still sure didn't have crystal ball to predict that Franklin would be down this year. And maybe you have written or video proof that this is wrong too but I had someone who works in the football program tell me that while trying to pickup a non conference games a 3A ( and he didn't tell who) told them that he wasn't taking a chance on playing a small 1A school that could beat them. But if I got my facts wrong I apologise I go by what I'm told, sometimes you have multiple sources and it checks out and sometimes just one person and don't. I don't work at the school.
I know who your source is, and it is pretty much fact lol, but try not to make it sound like Mitchell was dodging Franklin last year. They couldn't make the schedule work out, and the second that they could make it work the matchup happened. And Old Mountaineer is correct too. There were 3 prominent 3a teams and one not so prominent 3a team that Mitchell reached out to, and only one took on the challenge.
No disrespect to mitchell...its pure hell for any half decent team in WNC To get no conf games as no one wants to play...its worse when your stuck w only 5 conf games..i know for a fact Franklin had rather lose playing a good mitchell team than beat a home school w 12 players by 50....and though i hate how the NCHSAA dies most things..maybe if strength of schedule remains a factor that will encourage better non conf games
We've played McDowell every year. We neighboring counties is a easy non conference for both schools.
Let's hope the kids for Murphy are focused on Alleghany and not on Mitchell like this thread seems to be.
It's us fans that talk about possible future match ups, revenge games like in the Mitchell - Cherokee game. But knowing these coaches they are stressing to their boys to focus on nothing but the task at hand, beating the team your playing Friday night and moving on. Not worry about who you may play next.
Murphy has been prepping for Alleghany since before the playoff brackets were even official. I'd say they're pretty well focused on it.

I expect the bulldogs to win and I hope they do. I want my Knights to knock them out in the western regional finals but if Alleghany somehow pulls the upset then that’ll be fine too.

A football culture, established with good players and great coaching. It's something that has been cultivated over many years. But it's never too late to get things going, just look at Mitchell for example and what they've built in the time Coach Pitman has been there.
I think Alleghany could/can be a consistently solid program and I believe Alleghany would fit well in the SMC if they were closer. It would really benefit that program competing against teams regularly that would show them the level of physicality and commitment it takes to be consistently good when you arent flush with crazy speed and freak athletes.

The biggest difference I've seen in highschools that can reload is a good feeder program. The head coach need to be involved in little league up. Pittman is the first coach at Mitchell to really do this.
Good point old mountaineer.I know Byrne's high in south Carolina runs the same offensive scheme in youth ball as the high school and they have been very successful
Alleghany is the only school in the MVAC that has the potential to turn into an SMC type school, I think they are on the right track up there, there youth programs are getting better and better, and you are now seeing them implement they same style of play the high school uses, the whole thing just depends on if the staff stays up there, that's always been the issue in alot of places, they get some success and then more on to the next big job, that's the difference in the SMC excellent coaching

WKRK will have it, not sure if WCNG will. For non Murphy fans WKRK broadcast is very much Murphy slanted, especially this season. I mean no offense to the new announcer but based on the Central Davidson and Rosman games that I listened to this year, the quality of the broadcast isn't nearly what it was when Joe Thorley was in the booth.

On one hand yes, but on the flip side this is when you try those plays out in case you need it in a later round game.
