It was like this last year too. UK's defense has been very good the last two years at allowing fewer explosive plays. Difference is this year, in the first four weeks, they allowed too many explosive passing plays.

That is one of the more impressive stats I have ever seen for a UK football team (especially given our history of getting straight up gashed on the ground).

Hopefully we can see more takeaways, tackles for loss and sacks as we move forward. Impressive stat for sure.

Games we have got pressure on qb pass defense has been ok. (Even first half against both usm and Alabama). Games when we haven't (Florida) we got picked apart

That after a really bad 2 1/2 games to begin the season.... Amazing turn around.. I think this is what Stoops was seeing before the season, but they didn't get off the snide until after a couple of really bad games..

That's impressive.
Stoops has done a good job with this defense.

Can't help but wonder what could be if Tubman, Hatcher, and Meant were still on the team.
While I'm at it, wish we didn't run Towels off..

You got any stats on these guys where they are playing at now? Last i read they werent exactly setting the world on fire at even a lower division.

I miss Towels
Why's everyone missing towels so bad? Barker was ESPN top 50 qb coming out of college I understand he hasn't been good but if he can't win a conference game in the acc how would he have beaten anyone in the sec? Now I also understand the sec is super down this year other than bama and a&m but Clearly the staff wanted barker over towels and after that clearly Johnson over towels. I know Patrick's stats are pretty good and johnsons are not but if the sec is better than the acc he wouldn't have made a difference anyways right?

I missed what Patrick Towles was SUPPOSED to be while he was here. Kid never had much chance with the o line problems, receivers that couldn't catch a cold, no quarterback coach and switching offensive coordinators every year.
Just couldn't find time to be anywhere close to his rating.

If you are going to criticize Stoops which I have a lot, you also have to give credit where it is due. The defense has improved dramatically. Is it in part due to some terrible offenses? Probably. But not all of it. I see people in position to make plays and then they make those plays. That is huge difference from the first two and a half games.

Agreed but yeah for sure some terrible offeses those 3 fumbles and 2 picks from vandy and sc defiantly didn't hurt the cause either. A w is a w and there has for sure been some improvements since fla game.

Have to agree that Stoops has done a remarkable turnaround with the defense. As weird as it sounds, Kentucky defense gave up fewer points than anyone to Alabama.

Lots of probable reasons....The offense turning into more of a running, eat up time deal. Worse offenses being played against ( that means Alabama is worse than New Mexico State or Southern Miss????)
Kids maturing, or more kids getting playing time, or just better luck.

I do remember just a few weeks ago that this Kentucky team would have folded like a cheap box with some of the bad plays/ breaks they had against Vanderbilt. Suddenly they found a way to stay the course.
Sure hope that kind of thing keeps working and building.

Gotta football to be played though.....and this is the time of season over the past two seasons that EVERYTHING hit the fan and went south forever.
We get to see if this gets fixed.

I will agree the defense as a whole has gotten better but that stat really means nothing. I'd like to see where we rank giving up runs of 5 plus yards. Alabama may have given up more 20+ but I bet they've given up less 5 yard runs. We still rank 97th in total defense giving up 2,262 yards this season at 5.7 yards per play. You WILL NOT win many games at that clip.

I wonder where we would rank if you were able to take out the two worst defensive games of the season for all teams?

@prospectcat The flip side to your point is that offensively you have teams that have feasted on poor competition (Missouri) that makes their offensive numbers look much better than they are. Those first two games really killed that defensive statistics, not that you can, but if you were to take those games out, UK has given up an average of 384.5 yards per game.

I said weeks ago, or maybe before the season started that TOP would be a key this year, and over the past five weeks UK has done a much better job at controlling the clock and keeping the defense fresh.

Again, look at the yardage we gave up in the first 3 games versus what we have given up the last 3, which includes Bama - who has the best offense (statistically) we have seen, and will see, all year.

Well he beat Wagner and U-Mass :)
Seriously Towles has no weapons at all at BC. A QB can't do it all by himself.

ESPN has our defense ranked 72. After the first two games, we were like 110. I think they are improving.
They were also put in a short field defense when Johnson fumbled in the first half and the fumble TD in the second half can't be attributed to them. That's 14 of MSU's 38 points. I still am baffled by their defense on the edge allowing the QB to continue to gain the advantage on his runs.
