I would be interested to hear your thoughts on both Elvies and SG. Favorite dishes?
I still need to eat at Elvie’s. I’ve enjoyed their beverages…

I’ve wanted to drop by for breakfast one day. I was thinking about doing that later this week either before I work or just before I attend the National Folk Festival this weekend…

Sacred Ground…

I love the brisket… specifically Brisket Melt sandwich and prime brisket…

Nachos in a can are great & also messy…

The corn salad might be my favorite side but I also like the green chili mac and cheese…

I’ve been meaning to try out the pulled pork sandwich and smashburger but I’ve gone in other directions…

No stars in Mississippi. NOLA only had three places to a get star. Emril's got two. Alabama had none. Memphis had none. Nashville had three.

Elvies has an awesome breakfast. We go pretty much every off season Saturday morning. I have not tried the brisket sandwich, but the SG brisket was good.

Let me suggest an off the wall place in Pelahatchie named Crossroads Grill that has the best burger I have had in my life.

Didn’t Visit Mississippi or whatever the state tourism board is called contribute like $300k for that? Just to have zero stars but then have restaurants like Ajax and Taylor Grocery get included on I guess essentially the honorable mention list? They got suckered on that one.

I say to anyone that will listen the Jackson area has a very under rated food scene. Not on the level of New Orleans or Atlanta, but far from bad. Elvie’s really is good. Sacred Ground is not traditional Texas Q or anything, but it is very good.
Have not made it to Elvie's yet. Went to SG a while back for a private corporate lunch. Basically had a sampler table with a little of everything. Brisket and sausage were good, and I really like the yellow mustard base sauce, very flavorful. The most disappointing thing was the pulled pork, very dry and stringy. But will definitely go back.....

My man, you research and provide links to almost everyone of your post, and you're gonna leave us hangin' with this?

You're not helping yourself here. Are you drinking the nachos?
When I’m dining in, getting nachos out of a can kind of disturbs my feng shui when it comes to eating… so I poured some out… and more came from the can than I had intended…

As I said, I can be a klutz… 😂

Highlands Bar and Grill in Birmingham had one star, but they have never reopened since the pandemic. Chez Fon Fon (shares a kitchen) next door is open and is outstanding.

There is no way a restaurant in Birmingham had a Michelin star before the pandemic. Yesterday was the first time a place in Alabama was eligible.

I got a chance to eat at Elvie’s for lunch a few weeks back. It was amazing.
I have been told Scared Ground is amazing, but it is more Cali style. If you are expecting southern BBQ you will be disappointed.

Maybe I was wrong. Would have sworn I read an article before the pandemic about it receiving one star. Apparently, not.

I think they got a James Beard award. It's not the same thing.
Not the same thing but just another reason it's crazy if we spent tourism money supporting this effort. The type of people that are going to let food recommendations influence their travel already have places to look to figure out good restaurants. I can't imagine the honorable mention driving any travel, particularly when Ajax is one of the restaurants listed. Yuppie Cracker Barrel is solid, but it doesn't really stand out.

I have not eaten at Elvie's in a while, but it is absolutely legit great cuisine. It was on our regular rotation for a couple of years, and it just never disappointed (I did not know about the breakfast.....shame on me.....I will absolutely make that happen)....and yes, Elvies did get recognized by James Beard.....but I do not recall the exact honor they got, but it is a big deal

Sacred ground is AWESOME....and I don't think I would call it california BBQ.....it's a formally trained chef that now loves doing BBQ. The brisket sandwich on sourdough w/ vinegar based greens dressing it is a FREAKING experience.....pork belly burnt ends.....left me speechless! if I had dentures, I would have taken them out to get everything out of the way for the taste experience of the pork belly burnt ends. I need to go back, and when I do, I will be getting the smash burger

I used to call on oxford and would always eat at AJAX......it became my go to place, and I loved it.....I don't recall it being gourmet level amazing, but I also get a little offended seeing it potty mouthed....it was damn good food, and made the fact I had to be in Oxford bearable!!!!

Jackson and surrounding suburbia has a legitimate food scene, and some hidden gems, and hopefully it will get better and better.

It's been since 2018ish for me, but AJAX was fine southern food back then. Along the lines of Trace Grill in Ridgeland, good ol' food for good ol' people.

probably around then or a little earlier when I was traveling up there......and I would say AJAX was much better than trace grill (and that is not a knock against Trace Grill by any means)

Elvies lunch is solid. Have not done dinner because I’m not evolved enough to appreciate the eccentric sounding offerings. Sacred Ground I’ve had two average and one good experience. I like the atmosphere and really want to love it but I haven’t found anything that is must have yet.

I was profoundly disappointed in Sacred Ground.

Place looks great but I just wasn’t ready for the vinegar based sauce on the pork sandwich. Just not taste preference so I’ll go back and try something different but just a warning to know what you are getting into with their bbq.

they did have an Alabama white sauce over on their sauce station but it wasn’t my favorite variant I’ve had of that either.

The fries were good though

anybody else have the same experience?

Not for nothing but TG won best lunch in Madison County by Madison Hometown Magazine & Best Burger in MS by Mississippi Magazine both this year. Best Buger by the MS Beef Council in ‘23 & Southern Living named TG their favorite meat & 3 in MS in ‘23. AJAX is the tits but don’t think TG ain’t putting out quality work…

I love that MS restaurants are getting looks for prestigious awards. Pulito’s got named too in something recent right? I love that Emerson got recognition for his Pocahontas joint being that it’s so Radically different than 463 or Caet. Dude is an absolute baller chef & operator.

While we’re here, Ridgeland has an absolutely insane steakhouse scene with Shapley’s, Ealy’s, Koestler, Tico’s, & Kathryn’s. I’ve eaten at top steakhouses all over the country the last 2 years in Chicago, NYC, Fort Lauderdale, etc… and Ridgeland, MS holds it own with anybody.

There a a lot of good steakhouses in the area, but they don't hold a candle to the best restaurant steak I've ever eaten, which was at Gibson's in Chicago.

The atmosphere, history, etc… Gibsons has but the steaks at Gibsons are not a different world than Shapley’s or Koestler. Prime beef is prime beef. That said, the clam chowder at Gibson’s is tied for best seafood soup ive ever had with the She Crab at Captain Anderson’s but I digress. The most unique steak flavor-wise was Keen’s in NYC (Bourdain’s favorite steakhouse). Their aging process added a deep richness that was really unique… but it still wasn’t a different galaxy than a prime cut at Shapley’s or Koestler… Pictured the last few good steaks I’ve had:,T-Bone at Keen’s NYC, ribeye Gibson’s Chicago, strip Ocean’s Prime Chicago, & strip at MM Shapley’s. They are all the same class. MS might not be able to hold our own nationally in some genres, like Italian, but steakhouses we 100% do imo.

I would suggest to all are interested enough to comment on this thread to try Elvie's breakfast if you have not done so already. It is so good. I would also suggest getting there at 9am because there is usually a line after that.

I'm not going down a debate rabbit hole. Like I said, you can get an outstanding steak at a few places hereabouts.

I've eaten too many steaks at Shapely's at this point. Nearly all were delicious (there was an inexplicable rotten tasting one once, but they agreed and fixed it).

The few steaks I've had at Gibson's were a different level. I'm not interested enough in the sausage making to figure out why (something tells me they have access to a better level of Prime than Mississippi restaurants, kinda like Peter Luger's), but those steaks were absolutely a step above what I've had here. And I've eaten a lot of restaurant steaks over a lot of years. I'm often disappointed considering the prices.

That's some nice beef porn, btw.
