Any News on Barker?

Thought I heard during bye week that Barker could be close after the MSU game.

Any word on him?

Btw- This doesn't have anything to do with Johnson being 4-1 or who should be the starter. Just a simple question about a player's health and availability to play this year.

Saw him in sweats and headphone Sat night. I take no news to mean no change. I think his return is unlikely, based on nothing BTW, but a lot of football left. Maybe he'll be back for the bowl game.:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

The worst thing for all involved would be to try and rush DB back. He needs to sit the rest of the year, maybe they can try and apply for a medical RS.

DB coming back to soon could end in disaster. Obviously coming back before he is healthy and playing could lead to him getting hurt again which may end his career.

Maybe he's healthy but things are rolling with SJ and messing with the mojo in sports can be disastrous.

Hope he can get healthy sooner rather than later. At this point I don't think the staff is in a hurry to get him back out there, the way Johnson has been playing. Probably just being cautious.

As of right now Johnson needs to finish the season as starter regardless of what happens with drew.

No news, but apparently being hurt for six months doesn't require surgery, so that's good news for all of us in the future.

From my experience back injuries come in 2 categories. Either "no big deal" or " you're pretty much done for the year". They don't tend to be like ankle injuries that go away after a few weeks. Back problems are either not serious or they take a season or more to fully heal. I will be shocked if Drew is back this season. I don't know if that means take the red shirt of Hoak now or if Luke Wright is a suitable backup but Stoops needs to come up with a plan here. Johnson is a running QB so it is very likely that he at least gets dinged up.

someone told me he hasnt even picked up a football in practices since the NMST game

he aint playing in 2016 (or early 2017, if we are in a bowl then). hopefully whatever the mystery back injury is will be healed so he can fully participate in Spring.

really hate it for the kid, waited 2 yrs behind Towles to get the keys to the car then this happens. and as much as I love Johnson he isnt the passer that Barker is. imagine Drew's downfield throwing ability mixed in with our discovered thunder & lightning rushing attack of Snell/boom.

Those Barker numbers for avg/g are skewed because he only played one 3 and out series to start the NMSt game.

If Barker were to play like he did in the first half against USM he would be my guy. Can't argue with 35 points/half.

Unfortunately, that's about the only time he's looked legit.

Most of the time, he looks scattered and makes terrible decisions. Just a hunch, but I don't think Barker is the answer for UK.

Just my gut feeling, don't think Drew will play rest of regular season. Back injuries are fickle, been there and been through rehab only to be disappointed in results.

While he would qualify for a medical RS, it would not do him any good without a waiver of the five to play four rule. And under current NCAA guidelines, he would not get such a waiver.

To get a waiver of the five to play four rule, a player has to miss two season for reasons beyond their control. Taking a normal redshirt as Drew did, it not considered beyond his control.

If we go bowling and I mean a big IF, just remember Johnson got us there and not barker.
and what does that mean, if it happens? Johnson crowned starting QB in 2017, no competition in Spring needed? Of course we won't do that, that is silly.

but without a doubt if Johnson starts the rest of 2016 + a bowl, he will have a decided advantage in number of games played over Barker, if he is able to come back healthy from the back

Same type Spring competition we had this year and previous year. Competition was a sham, in my opinion.

But you are basing that off of his first starts last season with Dawson's offense and the first few games of this season when the oline was porous and Drew apparently had a nagging back injury (which got worse). We haven't really seen Drew behind a solid line or at full health. Certainly not simultaneously.

I agree with this. Starter was pre-named to avoid controversy and adverse affect to pre-season ticket sales.

I heard he's gonna be hosting The Price is Right? Can anyone confirm? Seriously though.....Stoops felt pressure from fans and probably boosters, etc to start Drew......IMO, benching Towles was a BIG mistake. I do believe Drew would be more effective now that the O'line is performing better, but as to if he is better than SJ.....I have my reservations.....

I do find the secrecy odd. Every time Stoops is asked, it's "no update there". And that's it.

Not a fan of switching at this point anyway. SJ is trending upwards, and for whatever reason, this team is playing their asses off with him behind center. I'm optimistic he will start protecting the ball better.

I don't disagree with what you're saying, but it reminded about when Billy Jack Haskins was a Freshman. If I recall correctly, we had 5 quarterbacks. BJH eventually worked his way up to be the starter. I was impressed by his tenacity.

Just for grins, I think they may have been: Jeff Smith, Ryan Hockman, Jeff Speedy, Jeff Snedegar and Haskins. Probably wrong, but what the heck ...... for FUN !!

Unless he graduates, if Barker transfer to a D1 school next year he will have to sit out a year. This will be a year he will lose due to the five to play four rule. Thus he would only have one year of eligibility remaining. Under current NCAA guidelines he will not be granted a waiver of the five to play four rule. He would be better off to remain at UK next year, graduate, and then transfer.

I'm no doctor or chiropractor, but if he isnt getting surgery it is a broken bone in his back most probably? and nothing can be done except take it easy & let it heel? But then that doesnt make sense if Stoops said this is an issue which was bothering him going back to the preseason.

very odd mystery

I fell off a ladder several years ago and got a wedge fracture in a vertebrae (25% break). I wore a back brace 5 weeks and took it easy a couple more months . if he has any kind of fracture I can see why he would not play football again this season.
