Based on the 2 out of 10 USM fans I'm friends with on FB, they are ranked

Especially considering that 3 teams between 25 - 20 all lost and West Virginia got skull drug by Syracuse. They're actually in a pretty good position to be ranked. Especially considering that they held SMU to only 3 points and the only team that they lost to was aTm. I don't consider it pathetic to be honest.

...MSU's only common opponent with USM is LA Tech, who USM beat by 2 in regulation.

USM's biggest win to date is winning @ Virginia.

All I know is MSU was ranked pre-season, but USM is ranked now.

That's called one team taking care of business & the other team screwing the pooch.

If Virginia hadn't lost to either UNC or NCSt then I'd be more inclined to say Virginia. Both teams are actually pretty decent this year. Had Southern not lost to Marshall, they would've already been ranked by now.

and you eventually will get ranked. I for one wouldn't want to play USM this season.

They've beaten no one near top-25 quality and they lost to an awful Marshall team, like non-top 25 teams do.

Demeaning them helps MSU.
It is important to cling to the belief that MSU is so much better.
The coaches and sportswriters have no clue.

if you don't think that they couldn't at least hang with the lower portion of the SEC then you're fooling yourself.

is a website that would provide that info without a lot of detailed time and research. It might be surprising to know. I have no idea. It doesn't seem to me that in recent years they have fared very well against SEC teams. But it also seems that they haven't played that many SEC teams in the last few years, but did for awhile.

but the teams they mainly played were Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss and us. Their record might not actually be that bad.

USM could beat any team I think after Bama, LSU, and Arkansas this season in the SEC.

More to say they weren't really afraid of the SEC. I don't think there's a way you can do that without crunching the numbers yourself.<div>
</div><div>This site is about the best I can do for you</div><div>
</div><div>http://football.stassen.com/cgi-bin/records/opp-opp.pl?start=1869&end=2010&team1=Southern+Mississippi&team2=Florida</div><div>
</div><div>Just put Southern as the first team and an SEC team in the second team and it'll show the record as if you're looking at Southern being the main team.</div><div>
</div><div>I remember looking at some of our records against other teams and for us against them it says we're tied at 12 wins a piece. I wasn't sure if that was right because I remember hearing Southern owned the record by a game or two, but I never knew how valid that was.</div>

That's just as dumb as every other post you make you on here. USM would get beat up and down the field by every team in the SEC, including our sorry *** team this year. They are not on the same level in any way. They are winning the games on their schedule, but they haven't played anyone even remotely resembling an SEC team, or even a halfway decent BCS conference team. If they are ranked it's because of their win / loss record, not because they are good. Every time you post this place gets dumber.

If it weren't for you, this place wouldn't have the edge it has. Obviously I'm not the only one that believes that as well. Hell, there are 2 others in this same thread that thinks Southern would be competitive against quite a few teams in the SEC. If you're as much of a badass as you're trying to show, please tell them the same exact thing you're telling me. You have a reputation to protect. Don't disappoint.

I skimmed through most of them and their record looks pretty bad because the team in the SEC they played the most was Alabama and they got worked by them on a regular basis. The only teams I was able to find they had a winning record against were us and LSU (they only played 1 game). There were also quite a few teams the only played once like USCe and Kentucky and a few others they haven't played at all like Arkansas, Vanderbilt and Georgia.<div>
</div><div>I didn't look to see if they played against any older members when they were still in the SEC so I don't know exactly how that will help or hurt their record, but because of Alabama, it's not even close to a winning record.</div>

your view is skewed. I haven't seen USM but I have seen OM, Tennessee, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and State and any of the top 60 teams would give those teams a battle.

puts them at about a 27.6 % win rate...interesting...so they've won about 1 of every 4 times they played. So projecting it, if they were in the SEC, they'd have an average record playing 8 teams of about 2-6 every year.

Yea I'm from Hattiesburg, but I'm not there right now, but because I'm from Hattiesburg and watch their games from time to time... my view is skewed? But yours isn't...and you haven't watched them play? And then you come back and say that any team in the top 60 would get a game from Vandy, OM, Tenn, Kentucky, and us.... Which Southern is a top 25 team now which indirectly means that you're saying Southern would give those previously mentioned teams a battle... which is what I'm saying to begin with. I don't get the point that you're trying to make here, bud.

I'm saying any team (including USM) in the top 60 would battle those SEC teams and more than a few would win. I'm also saying because you are from Hattiesburg your view of USM is koolaidtastic.

The only thing I disagree with is saying my view is skewed because I'm from Hattiesburg. I watch them, but because I watch them is why I generated my opinion. Not because of that's where I'm from. If we played them on a neutral stage 10 times, I'd say we'd probably beat them 7 (or 6) out of 10. Considering what they're working with...they're not a bad team, which is something a lot of people on this board doesn't like believing.

of whatever ranking they have been given. I'm not worried about them if State matches up in a bowl game with them though.

that being said how would you know? They'd play quite a few lower SEC tier teams close...including State.

I feel we're the better team and would beat them more than likely. They at least gained my attention to where I won't sleep on them though.

So probably a worse record vs. other SEC teams. It does amaze me that USM can put together as good a team as TSUN and MSU in most years, considering the lax fanbase and facilities.

He apparently thinks the same. Claiming you're "ranked"when you don't appear at all in the BCS poll, and only 1 of the 2 other meaningful (yet now irrelevant) polls ranks you right at 25... is really pathetic.

yeah that was the worst game we ever could have played. 6 turnovers and TONS of injuries and you still only lose by 6 and had a chance to even win at the end. its too bad because we could have been ranked a couple of weeks ago. Our pass D is going to have to shapen up before we and if we ever meet houston in the championship game.

right they don't even face houston (until maybe conf championship game) ...schedule is a joke

as one usm fan told me yesterday... being in the SEC means nothing, when you finish in the bottom of it every year ...replied yeah i wish we were in the CUSA so we could win it and go to the liberty bowl ..great conference you got there.
