Beamers right, we ARE “so close”, but why?

If we could hold a good 4th qtr lead, we would be 6-4, likely 7-4 heading into Clemson week with a good shot at 8-4 and a 9 win season w a bowl win.

But we arent. We blew 4th qtr leads vs Missouri, Bama and A&M. Laid a turd vs a very vulnerable LSU and still had a shot.

So WHY are we close? Is it bc we have lots of great players but coaching is the problem? Or do we have a very average roster but coaches who have us “so close” and we just need a few more recruits?

IMO coaching is more the reason we are falling short. Being less talented but well coached usually looks like consistency, a team who consistently is a tough out, loses close games, but the output usually looks consistent.

A great roster with bad coaching is highly inconsistent. Like how we can look like a top 10 team sometimes, or like a Division 3 team at others. Our OL is horrendous but look at their bios, all talented guys who were “All-Something” as HS players or at others colleges. They just look lost out there.

So frustrating. A first round QB and a defense that leads the SEC in forced turnovers yet we are garbage

If I hear "Sellers is a first round QB" one more time......

He is absolutely not a first round QB. That is absolute fantasy. I'm not picking on you per se, but I keep seeing someone on this board posting that "He's a first round QB" and it's absolutely not true. Sellers has played the entire season to not get hurt, and it shows. Maybe he's being coached that way...but somebody gave that kid some atrocious advice. He WILL NOT throw the ball on time, if at all and I have a perfect example of that.....

A&M game - 4th down, losing by 1 point and about 12-14 yards to go....it's going to be an obvious passing play...and did I mention IT IS 4th DOWN!!! A QB absolutely must throw that ball, even into triple coverage....win, lose or draw, you must throw that ball. What does Sellers do??? Runs to the sidelines and promptly turns it over on downs. And he's been doing that alllllllllllllllllllll season long.

He eats sacks like candy because he won't throw it. Someone else noticed he sits on the sidelines alone, never shows any signs of leadership or getting the team into rah-rah mode...

I will say I think he's a good kid. No question there. But he has been absolute trash this season, week after week, making the same dumb decisions over and over. It is mind boggling how many poor decisions he continues to make....IE: breaking out of pressure at the line only to scramble around and eventually run out of bounds for a LOSS when all you have to do is chuck it into the stands and you don't lose any yardage. How hard is that??? That is coaching...... Spurrier would have definitely benched him by now, if nothing more than to drive the point home until he learns it and shows it in practice at the very least.

I know all about the OL and how atrocious it is. That is coaching. Yes. We can nitpick all the details all day but the downfall overall was bringing back a terrible OL coach for a 3rd year and not hiring any real assistants to speak of. If we lose to Clemson....that will be the end of the road for Beamer. No question about it. He might have had some wiggle room there had we just lost "normally" to A&M but we lost in historic, collapsing fashion and the whole country is talking about it. That's going to be hard to gloss over for Donati....if we lose to Clemson, he won't have any choice but to fire Beamer. IMHO. Buyout or not.

Two things- poor coaching decisions. Some on-field decisions but the off-field decisions hurt us more than the on-field decisions (coaching hires).

Secondly, I agree 100% with Rob D.'s assessment. Lack of player leadership on both sides of the ball.

They're not close, Beamer's an idiot.

Sticking with the conference losses where the final score was close, the only game they were actually close in was Alabama.

Score against Mizzou looked close but they got absolutely dog-walked on both sides of the ball in the run game, you don't win games like that and the score was deceptive. LSU's offense sucks too, so they didn't win by a large margin. It never felt like SC was controlling the game nor were they going to. Against A&M, we all saw what happened when they remembered who they were. SC made some great plays in the first half and is to be credited for taking advance of the Aggie's mistakes. But without those mistakes 30-3 never happens. If they play up to their potential in the first quarter and no one is talking any longer about being close.

This statement is really just a self-indictment by Beamer. If we are, indeed, close, the only reason we aren't all the way there is that he retained arguably the worst OL coach in the country AND coupled that with maybe the laziest, most senseless OC hire in recent memory.
