Benjie Brown returns to coaching

According to the Lexington Dispatch, it looks as though Benjie Brown is returning to the sidelines. I saw this article this morning and wanted to share it. Benjie was a great coach while he was at Thomasville. I think he will do a great job at the new high school in Montgomery County.

The guy that wrote this article for the Dispatch is asleep half the time. It’s like his articles just end... like he nodded off.

There was talk of that on a 1-A thread, but don’t know if it’s official. There was also some speculation that they would be in the 2-A conference but have a higher than normal standard to make the playoffs.
I’m a big supporter of the Brown family, but believe the school should be placed where the numbers dictate....right away. The whole scenario of combining the schools before the new school is complete is questionable at best. To allow them to play down is unreasonable.

Benjie was an awesome offensive coach,we were all so use to the I formation 2 WR and a TE,all they did was block,benjie brought in different formations actually throwing to the WR and TE,all while still having a dominant RB

Montgomery Central will take East Montgomery's spot on the schedule as part of the Rocky River 2-A conference for its first two years. I'm not sure what the criteria will be playoff-wise...at one time, a school playing down could not go to playoffs back-to-back years (happened to Murphy back in the 1990's).

When the 2021 realignment is done, I would expect MC to be placed in a 3A conference with Asheboro, SW Randolph, etc.

As for not classifying them 3A immediately, it is probably because of the mayhem it would cause with schedules in whatever 3A conference they would be placed. Adding a team to a conference schedule in the middle of a realignment would be a scheduling nightmare for the schools in that league. Moving them into the existing EM spot in the Rocky River 2A conference is about the smoothest transition possible. That conference needs another team, too, since Central Academy of Monroe dropped varsity football after the 2017 season.

Oh, and I agree with mistermean on the unfair criticism of the Lexington Dispatch sportswriter. Ending an article with an applicable quote is a common journalistic practice.

They will be 3A next alignment. NCHSAA communicated with the conference schools and they preferred to have them replace East in the 2A conference instead of having to fill a game especially later in the season when it is tough to find teams with the same open date.

I don’t think any scenario is totally perfect. The Browns are great coaches. But this first year or two will have some growing pains. It’ll be good for them to have familiar teams to prepare for and it will be equally good for the other conference teams to avoid having to chace a non conference opponent at the last moment.

Personally, I’m looking forward to having a school down there that can fill out a roster in wrestling again. Both East and West didn’t have half a team this year when I saw them in action.

The solution of moving MC into EM's schedule spot was right there and an easy solution. Unfortunately, that's not the case in all reclassifications.

Although I have no direct ties to the NCHSAA, it just gets old seeing them blamed on these message boards for every inconvenience or perceived injustice. I wouldn't be surprised to eventually see a post blaming the NCHSAA for a botched order at the drive-thru window.

There is a set of criteria to meet for schools that requests to move down in classification. I would expect there can be some variances but there is guidance and criteria used to make the determinations.

The current ADM is not the only item viewed. Has the school lost 10% of the enrollment used to set the classifications for the alignment based on the ADM from Day 10 or 30 (cannot remember which one) of the current school year. They then research the ADM for grades 9-11 (total enrollment without the senior class) and review the incomng freshman class ADM from the feeder middle school. I expect Forsyth County is tough not easy to project due to the "open enrollment" periods they have in the spring and fall.

If a district area just lost a major employer that can be used as a factor. Not sure of the exact criteria.

One school that has complained and I have even heard of potential civil legal action did not drop 10% from the realignment enrollment.

Not sure about the news you mention, but Allen has already indicated in the newspaper that he would have some role with the team. Nobody in Thomasville expected any different. Where we missed our chance was not hiring Benjie as superintendent. Would have saved a lot of pain and a lot of money.

It is a great opportunity....probably more than most people realize. And except for one Friday night, pretty much everyone in Thomasville will be pulling for the Brown family. No sour grapes here.

This is great news for the Browns. Working with them both for 10 years, I always knew both had more years of coaching left in them. Allen is in great shape, his mind sharp as ever, and he is still one of the best x and o coaches in the state! It is a shame the higher ups wouldn't see that several years ago and leave him alone. Benjie still has many years left in him! This team will be good -- watch! And maybe the surprise mentioned above is that more of the old Thomasville staff is joining the Browns

I suspect the fall athletics season will be a real challenge for these schools, logistically if nothing else. Combining the players from two schools for all sports, not just football. Imagine coordinating daily practices for several teams with the schools about twenty-five minutes apart. All while facing the challenges of getting two football teams to play as one.
I admire Benjie for a lot of things. He’ll earn his money this summer and next year!
