Bowl options pretty limited

I am thinking even with a win over Louisville (iffy proposition) that UK is pretty limited in bowl options

SEC will get four teams in NY6, probably, but even so, Ole Miss (Citrus) and South Carolina (former Outback in Tampa) will then get picked over us, and even at 6-6, I have to believe Jacksonville and the Gator/Tax Slayer bowl would lobby pretty hard for Florida. And we have been to that bowl twice recently.

That leaves us in the group with Arkansas, Miss State and possibly Missouri or even Vandy, if they pull another miracle against UT.

Just for a new venue and a new opponent, I would probably like the Texas Bowl in Houston vs. a B12 team, like Kansas or Baylor. I think the game is on December 28. They usually pick a SEC West division team, but there is no rule that they do so, Vandy played in it a few years ago. Another wild card is the new tie in with the Las Vegas bowl vs. a PAC 12 team. I cannot remember the last time we played a PAC 12 team, in the 1970s against Oregon State?? That has a TERRIBLE date though, December 17, but OTOH, the way this season has gone, maybe it is best to get it over with ASAP.

Wherever we land, for the first time, I think we will see a fair number of opt outs, just not going to be a lot of enthusiasm in the fan base or with the team with a bowl in Houston or Vegas. Cant' see us in Birmingham, but could possibly put us in Liberty bowl in Memphis also against B12.

You may be missing the main objective. Fan enthusiam or not, the main benefits of going to a bowl are the extra month of practices in December and the postseason publicity. No team in the country needs the extra practices to prepare for the spring more than we need them. No matter what bowl it is, the benefit of extra practices for this young team could be very important.

Well, after what has happened - beating U of L will be seen as an accomplishment. Unlike you - since Florida is now out I am hoping for either the Las Vegas Bowl or Texas Bowl. Places fans never get to do - and both would be fun places to visit as far as I am concerned. If UK loses to U of L - doesn't matter - many of us aren;t going to see a 6-6 team end up 6-7!

Go Big Blue!

Birmingham.
It looks like the Birmingham Bowl and the Gasparilla are out of luck. The “second tier” bowls will go without an SEC team unless Vandy beats UT.

We will have 4 in play offs/NYD6, a fifth in Citrus, a 6th in Gator/TS, a 7th in MCB, an 8th team in Liberty, a 9th team in Texas and a tenth in Las Vegas.

I think we can still have 4 ineligible.

Ah ok, I hadn’t done the math just waiting for the U6 result. Thanks!

We’ve needed extra practices going on 20 years now. It’s not practice it’s what they do in practice. Which from the product on the field doesn’t look like much. I think this would be a good year to just end the season after Saturday and everybody step away and decide what you really want to do. Looks like we won’t have much to cheer about in our other sport that matters either. I may take up knitting.

Only one problem now. With NIL, rosters could/will look totally different come April vs December. May have become a mute point for extra points of December practice. Free agency in "amateur " sports. Killing the sport.

Very true, even CMS said he now is coaching a team with "85 free agents", so continuity and keeping the roster together is becoming passe, frankly recruiting HS players is beginning to take a back seat to "winning" the transfer portal, e.g., Southern Cal, who hardly signed any HS players but has an inside track to a CFP spot.

We need a bowl to extend the practice for next year so we can win 6 games and extend the practice for 2024 to help win 6 games in 2025 to extend the practice to help win............ect. ect.

The "extra practices" comments from coaches gets a little exhausting after awhile. I know its beneficial but its overrated, especially if Scangarello parts ways. I know its important to get the extra spring practice in December but its not the end all be all to success.

If we cant go to the FL bowls, then I personally would love to see us go to Houston or Vegas.

It's important for young guys and culture. It's also a paid for quasi vacation for the team. It's a helluva trip for fans that go.

Ya we'd all love another citrus bowl but a trip to a Florida bowl of any sort is always welcome to me. I remember many years hoping we'd somehow luck into 6 wins.

Agree with you on that, I went to both Citrus Bowls and the Ga Tech Gator bowl . . . . but Florida bowl game just not in the cards this year. IMO.

I agree although I think gator is in reach depending on what Florida does. We went there before with just 6 wins. I never heard of the other bowls in Tampa so I'm guessing they're beneath where we'd choose?

Sure seems like mcb is lining up for us. While I'm not a huge fan of the new Nashville, it's certainly still a fun trip imo

A game against Illinois or Minnesota, neither of which we have ever played (I think), would be interesting. MCB and Nashville can be fun if you get lucky with the weather, I have been to two MCB bowls.

South Carolina is not in over us just b/c of head to head. The conference office works with the bowls and the schools to get mutually beneficial matchups.

With that said, if I'm outback or gator, I'd take South Carolina over UK b/c their fanbase is likely more fired up than UK's fanbase b/c of outperforming exceptions (vs. UK underperformance).

I think the most likely landing spots are Vegas or Gator. The opponent will be attractive (Pac 12 in Vegas or possibly ACC / Notre Dame in Gator), but I don't see the BBN flocking to any bowl destination this winter after this debacle of a season.

South Carolina and Arkansas winning Saturday certainly did us no favors as far as procuring any Florida bowl bid, that said I dont think either are completely a lost cause.

What could really be a fly in the ointment for alot of eligible teams in the conference is that Ole Miss and even Tennessee are no longer locks for NY6 and could fall into backwards into the traditional SEC bowl slots

AmeriQuest / Outback: Think South Carolina in definitely in the drivers seat now for this bowl. though Arkansas beating Mizzou would give them a argument for as well.

Music City: Aint happening due to the basketball conflict (though that seems less important with ever passing BB game)

Liberty: With Arkansas, MSU and Ole MIss all bowl eligible cant imagine they pass up taking one of them.

Gator: Yes weve been to JAX twice in the last 6 years, but a 6-6 Florida team that endeason getting beat by Vandy and FSU I cant imagine is all that attractive.

Houston Almost always a western teams, would seem like the blah-ness this bowl would be opt out city for our better players.

Las Vegas Thjnk the conference might want a more "branded" team to be the first SEC team in bowl.....but also think most "branded" teams would balk at the early date.

Birmingham / Gasparilla: If Ole MIss and UT fall into traditional bowls, this would definitely be in play for us.

Personally a month ago, I was totally against Vegas for various reasons, but now Ive warmed to the opportunity to play a UCLA, Washington or Utah in a bowl.

LHL this AM made it sound like Vegas Bowl was pretty interested in UK.

I learned two amazing facts in the article which would make a trip to Vegas vs. a PAC 12 team interesting:

A) UK has only played ONE PAC 12 ever (Oregon State twice, 1968 and 1976)

B) UK has NEVER played a game west of Austin Texas

Most likely PAC 12 opponent would seem to be Washington State or Oregon State, assuming they lose to Oregon this weekend.

It's not completely out of the question that we could go to Birmingham. I know everyone is excited about that possibility, myself included!

How could it happen? Assume the SEC has a minimum of three NY6 teams. If it is only three, Birmingham will get the 10th choice. If there are four, Birmingham gets the 11th.

Could UK be as low as 11th? If there is a loss to U6, you betcha! All it would take is for Vanderbilt or Auburn to pull a massive upset and either might jump a 6-6 UK team in the bowl hierarchy. I don't think Mizzou could, though, even if they beat Arkansas. I guess we still might be above a 6-6 Florida if they don't upset FSU.

We really don't want to lose to U6.

Who cares?
We should want the bowl game that's as close as possible to Lexington Kentucky at this point.
Why would you travel to watch this team? LOL.

I ain't driving 200 miles to watch them lose or to see a bunch of them set out the game or transfer on December 4th.

Think of it what you will, but it IS beneficial, maybe not as much from an X's & O's standpoint but for player development. Think of it this way, our Seniors will have had upwards of 60 to 75 additional practices over the course of their college careers because of this being the 7th straight year of us going to a bowl. That's damn near a full seasons worth. So yes those extra practices are very beneficial, especially to the younger players.

Reliaquest Bowl is formerly the Outback Bowl. I hate the name changes. Anyway, that bowl is next in line after the Citrus. We blew a shot at that one after we lost to Vandy.

What's the monetary drop off on these bowls? Say the Las Vegas versus Reliaquest (Outback) Bowl? I know all SEC schools split the total pot but, was just wondering.

The really sad part is when we lose the Gasparilla Bowl. Levis isn't gonna play in it and we do not have a capable backup. We'll have 7 points late in the 4Q, ST's will have at least three major gaffes (I predict bad snap, missed FG and a block in the back during a return) and the defense will just give up in a meaningless bowl game.
