They say overnight and use Vandy, but the portal has been around for a few years now and that staff is 5 years in basically. There's no overnight fix unless you already are loaded with talent/depth to a point. People tried to use Arkansas earlier and now they're sitting around .500. There's no silver bullet to sucking like we suck.

Yeah, you can definitely quibble with the “overnight” part. SMU, Vandy, Illinois and Colorado have all been multiple year projects Duke’s coach is in his first year, but he took over for Elko who had it rolling. Indiana and to a lesser extent Syracuse may be the only true overnight turnarounds on the list.

Still, it should give State fans some hope that all is not lost in the NIL/unrestricted transfer era.

Also Cignetti brought 13 players from JM with him. At least 7 start. 2 on the DL. Thats huge to get guys that know your system. Most schools aren’t gonna have that possibility.

This is an interesting read on how the transfer portal is allowing traditional doormats to have success.
Also, maybe we should have hired Cignetti.
If u r talking rebuild lebby vs cignetti is like an entry level freshman vs a phd.

google Cignetti IU interview on YouTube, he’s just a really smart impressive coach. He has kept his staff intact through three different programs, much like Leach. Has rebuilt and won everywhere. IU vs Michigan and Ohio State is really interesting.

Yall love doing this, comparing our situation to one that is not equitable. Arkansas hired Man-Tits, a career OL coach, the same year that we hired Leach and he went with the "CEO" approach.

It worked for a couple of years until he bottomed out at 4-8 last year with a loss to lowly Arnept and then threw a life raft to a former Louisville, Arkansas, and Atlanta Falcon head coach to save his butt.

What Arkansas, Vandy, and others did was not a one year turnaround. These are coaching staffs that have been in place for 4-5 years and they didn't decide that positions other than QB and WR weren't to be bothered on the recruiting trail.

Except Arkansas brought in qb,rb, wr, 3 starting o linemn in the portal, LbS from Georgia, FSU, DE who was small school all American, safeties from tenn and Florida, and CB From Alabama State who starts....

point is they rebuilt their team in the portal in one year. meanwhile we haven’t brought in anybody in the portal in two years other than Shapen and redundant wide receivers.

that’s the difference

I was thinking it was more Petrino than portal.
Petrino replacing enos was huge but they brought in a ton of good players that remade their offense and defense. Arkansas can’t match up against passing teams on defense but they can shut down a run game which is why they beat a top five team Tennessee

I’m also not familiar with Vandy’s coaches or roster (other than Pavia), but announcers have said repeatedly that Lea realized what he was doing wasn’t working and had a post season overhaul

I'd argue that it has made the on-field product worse as a result. Teams are inherently better when they can bring a guy up through their system for a couple of years and plug them in when they're ready. Today we have third year guys who have started a new system each year. It makes for worse football on the field.

This is probably also why teams that have been bad historically find it easier to slip up and get a win or two against "blue bloods."

It's also why none of these super portal heavy teams, such as our neighbors to the north, will ever be elite. You can be very good with a portal heavy roster, but you need system linemen to be a natty worthy team.

in the 2nd paragraph you should have also added that when he threw that life raft he also hired his replacement

I love this fake news line, just more idiot drivel from the Leach haters. His classes looked just like any other MSU recruiting class the past 50 years.
