Do You Drink Cow Milk or an Alternative Like Almond Milk?

I got off of drinking cow milk about a year ago. About 3 months ago, I started making protein drinks at home using Almond milk, and now go through maybe a 1/2 gallon of it every two weeks and only get regular dairy with the occasional ice cream cone and a splash of it in my coffee.

It seems like I can draw a time line of feeling generally healthier that coordinates with the change.

Anyone else have a similar or contradictory experience?

We drink both. Smoothies get Almond Milk, but cooking and cereal and oreos get the classic stuff.

I have kept my kiddos on whole milk, but I have switched over to Almond milk. Still use real milk for any cooking or baking I do.

Anyone that thinks it's natural and sane to milk and drink an almond probably also digs Caitlyn Jenner.

I guess breast milk is the new fad in post workout drinks. I'll be sitting this one out, but to each their own.

Milk lost most of it's appeal some time in high school. I just don't drink that much. When I do buy it, I've been picking up chocolate milk called FairLife or something similar. It's got twice the protein, lowfat, the lactose is filtered out, and it's pretty tasty too.

I can't seem to find an alternative milk that has an acceptable protein content. For smoothies, I use greek yogurt and skip the milk altogether.

I can't hardly handle milk anymore the older I get the harder the stuff is on my stomach. I do have one question I switched from Braums Milk to Horizon Organic and the Horizon Organic last like a month and a half. Why is this? Wife and I love it because we can't ever use up our milk before it expires.

4 gallons of Braums 1% per week.

Don't understand Almond milk at all. I suppose some people's GI tract is built to handle pressed Almonds? Not this guy.

I'm an organic rice milk guy, but only over oatmeal and in smoothies. I get my milk in the occasional yogurt.

The only "plant based milk" without carageenan I can find is Trader Joe's organic soy milk, but I try not to drink too much soy.

I've wondered that too. So, I searched and found this: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/experts-organic-milk-lasts-longer/

In high school there were some days I probably drank a whole gallon in 24 hours. I still enjoy a cold glass of milk every now and then and Horizon Organic is what we buy but I'm lucky for a gallon to last a day and half at our house. Our two boys (6 and 10) go through 5 gallons of whole milk a week easily, even more when it's not 100 degrees outside. I've considered stepping it down from whole but they don't have an ounce of fat between the two of them so whatever.

We easily spend around $150 a month in milk. I need to buy a dairy cow.

My cousin has three boys with the oldest a freshman in high school. They told me they go through 4 gallons a week. I am not looking forward to my grocery bills once I have kids.

Ours are big Cheerios and Chex Mix eaters for breakfast so that's what really puts it over the top. 9 times out of 10 when offered eggs and toast they would just rather have a big ol' bowl of cereal.

Thanks this was very informative. I will say after I switched milks was when it seemed like my body couldn't handle the Horizone UHT milk. I just can't wait to leave a carton on the counter over night then walk in and down that beast in front of the wife.

I must live in a cave. I didn't even know almond milk is a thing.

Then again, I'm such an antiquated troglodyte that I never go grocery shopping. My wife does all of that for us.

Honestly, what is it? In a nutshell.

I could make a persuasive argument for myself if there wasn't such a relative dearth of nutrients. But there is, and I can't.

And I just told my son over the weekend that he shouldn't drink milk that had been sitting out too long (and I was wrong in this case). He left a half drank glass from lunch sitting out on the counter and then about 4 hours later I saw him drink it. (Still, that may not be a good idea since that article mentioned a 6 month shelf life as long as it's not opened.)

Oh ya I forgot about the opened part. She might get the last laugh there lol.

Alright here is one. Do you guys put ice in your milk?

FairLife is great stuff! It is from a local farm not to far from me in Indiana! Great little place to visit and damn good milk!

The best was in my youth when it came straight out of the milk tank and I knew everything about it. Who knows what happens to any product along it's path to you in today's times.

If we were intended to drink milk beyond infancy why does the human mammary gland stop producing it on its own? Drinking milk, especially that of another mammal, past infancy seems bizarre.

Needless to say, I can't stand the stuff.

Not sure I quite get the logic. Is there something inherently normal about, say, eating the cooked (or uncooked) flesh of a cow or the seeds of a tree?

Absolutely. Every other animal on the planet partakes in one or both of those activities (not necessarily a cow, but flesh and/or plant life). Life is dependent on it. No other animal specifically seeks to drink milk after infancy, much less that of another species.

By no means am I saying that people shouldn't drink milk. Like AT, my kids do all the time. I'm just rationalizing my personal level of disgust.

Trader Joes coconut milk in a can is another clean option. Just coconut and water.

Our dairy is almost all in fermented form from grass fed, anti-bio free hippy cows.

I do down a bunch of whey though.

And back to the original post: yes, crappy dairy gives me a bad stomach, bad skin, sinus infections, etc.

Do you eat food that has milk in it? If so, why?
