I don't think it's about sports, that's just a byproduct of it. What it is, is an attempt to resegregate.

It would be interesting to know how many charter schools in North Carolina are more than ninety percent white, or more than ninety percent black. There are some of each, and I would guess the vast majority are in one of those two categories.
And that's the reason that towns such as Huntersville and Matthews have been granted charters and its only going to get worse. But hey no one cares as long as the politicians campaign on issues that don't actually effect the majority of people. Too many personal beliefs make election decisions.
The state could use the 3% rule that GA uses. It targets all schools traditional and non.
If you have 3% of school population from outside the county you move up that year.
One charter, Gray Stone, has students from eight counties. School is situated where four counties come together. Credit to GSDS, it is a top of the line college prep school where academics steer the ship.

The NCHSAA could just put all charters in a division and patriarchal schools that recruit, such as yours, in a different league or have them play to the population level they pull from. Take the race card and play both sides of it. Pretty sad when you can only blame politics on what is an issue that could and should be resolved by the governing athletic body. You think the legislature has no control over high school athletics? How about when a state representative from eastern NC put a change of conferences in a bill for the schools in his area. It was voted on without notifying the NCHSAA or the other schools in the conference they left or moved to. It cause a a lot of ripple effects but the NCHSAA was told by their legal counsel there was nothing they or the other schools could do except go to court to fight it.
When Bishop was winning the basketball titles I know fir a fact there were administrators in Chapel Hill who did not like it. The issue is if you go after Bishop what about the charters. If you think there are legislators that do not apply pressure regarding charters you are way off!
Here’s the big one and the push is from very powerful representative from the Cumberland County area. Home school students will be playing on their home district sports teams soon. Get ready it is coming.

I definitely do not question the academics at places like GSDS or TJCA. Those schools are top notch. Just don't think they need to be playing with schools that don't pull from 8 counties for sports.

Nah. Move it to just this side of the gorge to Needmore. What's in Needmore? A meat processing plant (good sausage) and an auction house. Plus you're right by the lake there which will bring in millions like Lake Norman Charter.

Respectfully disagree. A significant amount of posts on the 1A site for years, which will only increase as we move out of football season, is about charters, parochials, magnets and the NCHSAA. An understanding of how we find ourselves at this point in time is the first step into trying to find a solution. Charters in NC are in a large part the result of politics.
That sounds lame I'm a R and there is a charter less than 5 miles from us the only reason I don't vote for Ds is they try to take my ar 15s it makes me mad I'm paying tax for two schools in my my district but oh well

We have no Race in Mayberry everyone is welcome and treated with respect I had a Mom and Dad that took my tail to the wood shed growing up. Back in the 80s at MASH there was no such thing we treated each other with respect and loved one another and knowing folks around here nothings changed
Sorry to say 3d is right about the charters. We are starting to see a push for more charters in smaller towns and more rural areas. That is a big part of the constituency. It will continue to grow.

You do not pay additional tax for the charter. The charter gets the county supplement from the county each student lives in addition to federal and state money. Your local public school gets less tax dollars due to having less students.
Here’s some facts about Mt airy and their charter school:
1. Franklin elementary 68.7%white, 31.3% minority
2. Mt airy middle school 67.3 % white, 32.7 % minority
3. Mt airy senior 72%white, 28%minority
4. Millennium Charter 90.2 % white, 9.8% minority

We don't recognize race period you guys are nuts back in my day there were no charters no race and there were actually Ds and Rs I'll agree we were a 2a school with a wood shed raising Church on Sunday and back to work and school on Monday and i will live by this rule till I die I'm old School the way it should be
