Watching the Locke kid play, you can understand why he was a highly rated high school QB: ideal frame, big arm, a better athlete than I gave him credit for. But you don't have to watch long to find out why Mizzou fans are so frustrated with him. His mechanics are gawd-awful; he throws off his back foot and has in inconsistent angle of delivery. He has a tendency to "lock in" on one side of the field, ignoring receivers running open on the other side. Watching the replay yesterday, I noticed that he tipped off his quick reads, glancing over at this WR when they ran their bubble screens (which were engulfed by UK corners) and putting his head down when they were running the ball. Rookie stuff plagues the kid.
Football is an funny game. You have a guy with all the physical tools in the world, and with just this or that missing, you get a QB that simply can't cut it in this league. Ask any of us a year ago whether we would want Steven Johnson or Drew Locke on our team. The answer would be easy, right? Ask us this morning and you get a whole different ballgame.
