A friend of mine asked me about pulling his kid out of a public school, and transferring to a Catholic school. His son's sport is basketball, which is obviously just starting up this year. If he made the transfer, would he be eligible to play this basketball season?

Not if he tried out with his current school. If he did not he is out a month. That is also if your friend "moves".
