Coach Elliot talked up miggons. Said he had a good spring. Also said the dline really came on in the last week of practice..
My question is what are they looking for at dline??
I thought Elam played ok at NG after lewis went down last year and hoped that he could continue with his development, and take another small step forward.. I never saw anything in the spring game that would show improvement. Was that because of being told not to hit the qb ect? Or did he regress? P.S. i do believe that 2nd team oline is more talented than the starters but thats no excuse..
Also think meant will be solid but nothing dominant..
Middleton had potential to be a factor..
Back to my question.
Was elliot doing coach talk or is there more ability there than what my eyes saw?
Not sure what they actually are looking for... I love explosive guys like johnson, but it seems they are more concerned about the lineman taking up blocks and let there lb be the explosive player makers..
I dont think the def.will ever be good with that scheme... Explosive dlineman will completely change how a offense attacks you.. You have to be able to pressure the qb with your dline..

Take big z for a example.. Never really was a de that pressured the qb. But yet played a lot at Baltimore and played good!

I agree with maggert that we are a few dlineman and a ot away from going bowling, or being respectable..

Have to agree with you on this. I know others will come on here and proclaim how well our DL is coached and doing their job eating up blockers but yet we get run all over. :-/

I think they were told to make contact go through blocks but they weren't spinning, stunting, or pursuing like a real game... I think. My guess Is that depth is a concern and at that point they just wanted to be healthy. I think miggins, meant, and Elam are as good as the bottom third of the Conference. After t hat is big ????

I saw Elam stand straight up snap after snap in the B/W game. Didn't see much/any improvement in his technique that day. Why he won't take two steps forward before standing up is beyond me but that's the coaches' problem.

Coach speak is the ability to talk about the game but not really say anything. [laughing] Coaches are basically obligated to take a more positive than negative position in the media. By that I mean they cannot add fuel to a fire, regardless of how brightly that fire is burning. They certainly see the same problems as do knowledgable fans, but unlike fans, cannot be openly and bluntly critical. Instead of saying "the (insert unit here) just sucked" they must say things like "we need to get better in that area".

The B/W game was as vanilla on each side as you could possibly imagine. I'm not sure what the coaches wanted to get out of this game. But, FWIW, I think most "knowledgable" fans must be particularly disappointed in the way the #2 offense ran the ball against the #1 defense.

Peace

Two steps forward? He might get winded!
Funny. But to that point, in the B/W game Elam made little effort to make a play outside of his arm reach. I noted he was still listed at 360#s in the spring roster, the same weight as he started the 2015 season. That's 7 months without losing a pound. He might be one of those guys like J-LO who just simply has enormous trouble losing weight. Or he might not really be trying to do so.

It's a spring game! If the dline played as awful as the fans say the you would here we gotta get better or the 1s are not set. Instead the coaches said we played well and the dline has really come on the last week. If we gave up nothing on the ground people would ***** about the oline. Spring games are great for fans but mean jack squat.

Last time Ill beat this horse. We have to recruit that d line the way we have the secondary. If not, we run the risk of having the best rated secondary in school history....because no one will have to pass. Forget three yards and a cloud of dust.....we could be looking at twelve yards per carry.

I thought he made progress during the season but it looks like that progress has disappeared. Elam actually looked bigger around the mid section in the spring game than he did during the season. I believe he's put the weight back on.

To the OP's point I thought our best line up was when we used a 4-3 front with Ware and Daniel at the ends and Miggins and Meant at the tackles. That group is really small but quicker and got a lot of penetration. We did a much better job defending the run out of that smaller 4-3 front than we did with our base 3-4. That's part of the reason I'm not buying the "we were just playing vanilla" excuse as to why our defense was so bad against the run. Man vs man up front our D line just got beat. And beat badly. We wouldn't have executed exotic stunts and blitzes any better if our D line is getting washed out. I suspect we will see a lot of the 4-3 front this year.

I quickly re-watched the first half again (3rd time) and only saw the Blue defense in a true 4 down alignment about 5 times and 4 of those were pass situations (3rd & long). Elam was in a couple of times in that set. The defense got 2 sacks (maybe a third not called). The offense had a dropped pass, a 29 yard QB run (right past a pushed back Elam) and another 8 yard run (questionable sack play). Is that better than the 3 front? I don't know. Regardless the common denominator was as you say; the Blue front 7 got beat and sometimes pretty badly regardless of how they lined up.

You really think second team O-Line better than first?
