State expected us to come out immediately with the running game...especially after seeing how poorly Johnson threw the ball against Vandy. But our first two offensive plays were passes. Both were on target, the first one dropped by the receiver (should have been caught) and the second one went for 9 yrds. In the first drive Johnson threw 5 times. Drive ended with the missed FG, but it accomplished exactly what we needed. It loosened up things for the running game, it got the receivers involved in the game, and it gave a boost to Johnson's confidence. I think it surprised everyone to see us pass 5 times in that first drive. I know it surprised me. They were mostly safe passes, but it let the opponent know they couldn't just sit on the running game. It also sends a message to Missou that they will have to defend both aspects of the game...and should help open up our running game as long as Johnson can continue to hit some throws.
