Gilmore and ESPN Exaggerated Time Mgt

Don't always listen to TV analysts. I just watched the replay for the mere purpose of watching clock mgt. There was 22 seconds left when the play started and Johnson received the ball with 17 seconds. The pass to Baker took 8 seconds. The lack of a timeout cost 5 seconds.

Gilmore made it sound like several seconds were wasted. The whole drive had 5 wasted seconds! I've seen far, far worse by other ranked SEC schools this year.

Granted, I would have liked to have those 5 seconds back. But Stoops was leaving himself 2 timeouts for a play across the middle then the last one to setup for FG. If Johnson dumped the ball off in the middle instead of going for it all that would have been TO #1. Last TO would have been saved for FG.

Stoops has had issues with clock mgt in the past. Tonight wasn't one of them. 5 wasted seconds in the whole drive! Johnson should've chucked the ball on first down. Not calling the TO was the right play.

We should have taken timeout on the first down play on the series where MSU scored. Hopefully a lesson learned for CMS. All's well that ends well.

Got the win, but still bad clock management. Much better than a loss though. Not too many coaches leave with a timeout in their pocket needing 15 yards with 9 seconds to go. Had to be somewhere in that 1:09 to sneak that one in.

It's a win though and we needed it.

Not sure clock mgt was iffy. I wished Johnson would have 'chucked' the ball and saved time and timeouts. I'm sure Johnson was coached to take what was available in middle of the field. That would have resulted in TO #1. That would have left the entire field open and TO #2 to setup FG.

Best thing I heard tonight was "Badet got down just like we practice it each week." Has to be good for team to get a win after a player does what he's been coached to do.

Agree 100% with you that a win is a win and it was an exciting one. Very few of us who've followed UK football very long expected to win after MSU scored.

Should have called one on Miss State's last drive, was obvious they were going to score, unless we got a TO, should have used one to have 1:30 or more on our last drive.

Sorry you cannot be more wrong There is no way it could have been done better.
Any time you score on the last play of game to win, that is perfect clock management. It doesn't get any better than that.

Are you serious?? His best throw of the night was to Badett. But he underthrew Baker badly and Baker slowed down to make a play on the ball. If he would've led him that was an easy td. We won in spite of Johnson. He missed many open wrs again, as is his pattern every game. And the two fumbles that led to 14 pts for msu. Get pissed and ***** all you want, this is fact.

And let's not pretend that was great time management either. You honestly think he wanted to play for 50 plus yd fg?? He'll no. Should have used a time out earlier on that drive when we failed to get out of bounds one of the times. Glad we won, but this is revisionist history already

I agree that the goal in good clock management is to score as time expires or to run the clock out if you have the lead. But it goes without saying that with better use of our timeouts we could have had a shorter FG opportunity to win the game.

We won and that's all that matters but Stoops really needs to improve in the clock management area of the game.

Might have been the best thing to happen to us. If they had called time out, we might have had time left after the field goal. That would have killed me.

We scored 33 points in the second half and 41 overall with 500 total yards. Yea Johnson sucked. State only gave up like 340 per game on the year. The last fumble hurt but 300 yards passing against a team only giving up 202 per is phenomenal

I'm not taking up for Gilmore, but I think we did lose over 10 seconds on that drive. I believe after one of the first downs we wasted at least 4 or 5 seconds before we hiked the ball. I know we lost at least a few seconds when Coach Stoops was arguing over the horsecollar and I was thinking we lost some time for one other play. I can't watch it again so I am just going by memory and could be wrong. It definitely wasn't the best use of clock management, but at least we still won and didn't give them another shot.

The truth is we have not been very good after leaving time on the board before a half. It seems even with less then a minute left teams have scored on us before time expired. I am glad no time was left, and screw those lost 5 seconds, lol.

I'm not worried about it but he could have handled time better. He could have used the timeout several times earlier in the drive and saved more than five seconds. But if it was only 5 seconds, Badet could have made that FG a lot closer but running further before dropping. A win is a win and this one is done, but he lost valuable time. But its a mistake and that where you learn, making mistakes. At least it came in a win.

Only thing with the to on states drive. If you call it and do stop them. They had three timeouts and would of got ball back with around a minutes to go if we didn't get a first down.

Exactly, has Stoops learned everything he needs to be a great HC, hardly. But he did learn from tonight. And a winning 25 yard FG isn't anymore important then that winning 50 yard FG. Just make sure you have a good kicker, lol.

There were so many ways that this game could have played out, I just find it strange that it finally worked out in our favor. :)

Absolutely awful clock management. Badet and McGinnis saved Stoops bacon big time. a 50 yard field goal is fudging difficult for a reason. We had 22 seconds......... and wasted 7 of it not calling a time out... then another 6 on the pass. 7 seconds is a whole other play and possibly 10 yards closer if not more.

and get off Baker's back........ Most receivers , that ball bounces off the finger tips like that and the player doesnt even get a shot to still catch it....... but Baker reacted quickly and almost still caught it off the bounce.

By not calling TO he lost 5 seconds. What happens if he uses that TO at the 22 second mark and then Johnson gets,sacked on the next play? You have to burn your last time out and have very little chance to get in FG range and stop the clock at the same time.

There was a lot more time lost on the final drive than being discussed here. That FG saved Stoops tonight and possibly his job. Any competent coach in any league, And I'm including pop warner, manages that better.

It is a travesty we are paying so much for that kind of performance. We should have had 2-3 more plays to get in position, but we got lucky, very lucky.

Furthermore, his comments about being Proud just do not seem sincere. He is feeling the heat, no doubt.

So glad we won, I hope Stoops learns from tonight.

It was not bad clock management. Had UK not achieved first downs, it would need that extra time out. It worked out that there was one to spare, but the team got to the line fast and ran an actual play at 20 seconds. Calling a TO there may have not worked well. And, it worked well.

Clock management could've been better. But Stoops I think wanted at least one TO in his pocket if he needed it.

I still don't have an issue with it. We caught MSU off balance and Baker yet again proved why he should never get the ball thrown his way in an end-game situation. We took advantage of MSU napping and almost ended the game right then and there.

It only worked out bc we nailed the long fg. The management was sketchy. I think though it's great we won bc stoops can go back to that film and learn from it. There was a lot of material on that game for the team to work on but we pulled it out which shows that winning is becoming a habit for our team. No instead of watching mistakes in a loss our staff can see the mistakes but with the W. trust me as a coach when you get to that point with your team well that's the goal now watch this team take off

They were hating on UK the entire time. Didn't even try to hide the fact that they wanted us to lose.
