I do not get this.

Plaxico Burress. Fires weapon in crowded bar and shoots himself.
Ray Lewis. Murder allegations.
Kobe Bryant. Rape allegations.
Ben Rothesburger. Rape allegations.
Michael Vick. Served time for dog fighting.
Tim Tebow. Likes to pray and does not throw a pretty spiral.

Seriously thought what am I missed about the Tebow hate?

but it's the ones who think he's the answer to all that are the issue and get so upset. Look, he looked like total *** yesterday, and got completely lucky to get the win. The other coach kicks an extra point, and game over. Even the passes that brought them back were ugly end over end ducks. Could he be a good QB some day? Sure. But after being evaluated by many teams, GMs, etc. people think he doesn't have the tools. He got his chance in training camp, and was beat out.

Hell, they had Orton on the trading block trying to make Tebow the face of the franchise. They have ads targeted about him. But he just couldn't win the job. So he eventually got it out of default. And he looked like the worst QB I've ever seen for three and a half quarters. Hopefully he improves. I don't give a **** one way or the other, but the fuss is caused by Tebow lovers who feel he's being discriminated against. He's not. He just hasn't shown he can be an NFL QB yet. At most he looks like he can be serviceable. But right now out of the new QBs, I'd take Stafford, Bradford, Newton, and even Ponder looked better than him yesterday.

Not sure if Tebow would actually be defined as one, but I think most people see someone that committed to a religious position get concerned. Especially those people that tend to be cynical about anyone who presents an image that is too good to be true.

The thing with Tebow is I don't think he has really been someone to push his beliefs on others. He states his beliefs and seems to live by them. It has been the media that has oversaturated the Tebow image. Tebow or his family has never made declarations elevating him like "Tim is going to change the world" as Earl Woods said about Tiger.

So I understand how this has occurred, but it is an idiotic position.

They don't care about much else. That's why Vick is playing, and all the others. If Tebow was great, there would be big demand for him. It's not his beliefs keeping him off the field.

the hate for Tebow came WAY before his pro career. People hated him while he was at UF and it's because he's such a great athlete AND a genuinely good guy. Yes, I'd also hate him if I were in college with him because he's just so dang good. He's one of those guys. Him being a vocal Christian only added hate to the envy people had for him. I love the guy even if he isn't a great pro quarterback. <div>Unfortunately a lot of people love to see good people fail and his only failure is that he cried during the SEC champ game (and who amongst us wouldn't have?) and isn't as great of a pro QB as he was a college QB.</div><div>

Plaxico Burress,Ray Lewis, Kobe Bryant, Ben Rothesburger, Michael Vick andTim Tebow.

Now which one of the above do I want my young son to emulate?

Those putting the hate on Tebow indict themselves, not Tebow. He gives teammates credit for wins, and he takes the hit for losses. As for not being good enough for the NFL, there are plenty on popular guys who get dropped for not being good enough. If Tebow isn't good enough, he wouldn't be there.

If it was based on popularity, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice would still be in the NFL.

but I know for a fact I saw Bama fans laughing as the camera panned across Tebow crying during the SEC champ game. I don't recall him crying during your game. Nice pic though. Quite funny.

That was he promised that they wouldn't lose again that year. Plenty of people laughed at him, including me. But he backed it up.

Most talking heads in sports media make their living on their opinions. And it doesn't pay to be wrong.

Most made the prediction that he wouldn't pan out becuse of his lack of passing skills. They are now simply defending those predictions.

But they have made predictions about many players in the past and it has not gotten to this level of polarization. The closest I can remember was Rush Limbaugh's comment on the coverage of Donovan McNabb.

It is more than Tebow's football ability. No one was ever that worried about Danny Weurfel starting a game in the NFL.

and coaches were scared of their jobs to play him. So did Randall Cunningham. It's being a non-traditional QB.

I particulary get a kick out of Trent freaking Dilfer critiquing the ability of quarterbacks to read defenses. He was just such a heady QB in his day.********

I have no problem at all with anyone criticizing Tebow's play. The problem I had was with all the people that never even wanted to give him a chance to get on the field to show whether or not he could get it done. At worst he has shown that he can be a solid backup QB in the NFL which is more than alot big time college QBs have done over the years.

great post. Ponder looked better, but lost (granted, the Broncos wouldve gotten shellacked by the Packers yesterday, but they played Miami). Bradford has still not proven overlydurable but certainly seems more durable than at first expected, but the Rams should be better than they have been. Stafford, incredible year, all time great type oftalent, buthuge durability issues. Compare his comments about his injury and Ryan's and it exudes *****. Newton is a freak, he'll have a ridiculous career. W/ tebow compared to Bradford, Stafford - if those guys get hurt all the time, it doesn't matter how good they are.

I still will not rule out a Tebow position change at some point. I say the Broncos give him a shot, another team gives him a shot and after that he makes a voluntary move to tight end because that guy HAS to be on the field for you every snap. He draws great play from his teammates b/c of passion, and doesn't call people out, only encourages, so its not the type of passion that would frustrate teammates. He could be the best tight end in the league based on his knowledge of coverages b/c of being a tight end, his elusiveness (he's fast, but he's more elusive than fast), and his power.

(anti-religious) zealots and someone who is anti-(religious zealots)

I like when athletes are good guys just because they're good guys.

I don't even mind the ones who do all the thanking god, etc. The only ones that bother me are the ones who act like because they are religious, that they no longer have the power to do anything (god wills it, etc).

Granted Tebow played the Dolphins while Ponder played the Packers but here are the stat lines:

Ponder 13 comp 32 att 2 int 2 TDs 59.2 rating

Tebow 13 comp 27 att 0 int 2 TDs 91.7 rating

he's a good athlete and a good runner... but his windup is long and his footwork is atrocious and it affects his accuracy a lot. Anybody who watched more than the last 3 minutes and OT of the game yesterday would see those very things on full display. His very first pass should've gone for a pick 6 and he threw another one in the end zone that 3 guys had a chance to pick.

He's in his second year so we'll have to see how he develops. He might never be a great NFL player but I doubt that he's bankrupt shortly after his pro career ends like so many other athletes. I'd certainly prefer him as a neighbor to some the athletes mentioned in the initial post.

His jersey is one of the top sellers so the former pro QB's on Fox or ESPN and talk radio morons should notice that fans don't find him polarizing. And although his religious beliefs are different from mine, he's no hypocrite. He lives according to his beliefs. He's got work to do but I hope he succeeds.

i agree 100%. it's the pro-tebow crowd constantly yelling about a bias against tebow due to his faith that are creating the polarization. which is of course going to draw a backlash from others.

There's the "<span style="font-weight: bold;">pure unadulterated hate</span>" reserved for athletes I genuinely think are bad people:

Rothlisberger - Rape
Hinez Ward - Dirty
James Harrison - Dirty
Cam Newton - Crook, liar
Michael Vick - Dog killer
Kobe Bryant - Rape

And then there's the "<span style="font-weight: bold;">annoying so I root against them</span>" category:

Tom Brady - Pretty much just jealous of everything about him
Eli Manning - ole miss alum, talks like a stroke victim.
Troy Palaumalalamu - No defensive player should be able to have that big an impact on the game, and he's a Steeler.
LeBron James - Incredibly ignorant, shut off from reality.

Mark Sanches used to be on the second list for me because the topless GQ photoshoot was a pretty big *** move. But then he ate a hotdog on the sidelines during a game.
Ron Artest used to be on the first list for me because he was a violent knuclehead. Turns out, he's legitimately out of his mind.

Some people have Tebow on this part of their hate list I imagine, for his college media darling status, and his flagrant faith.
Some people have Tiger woods on one list or the other depending on how appalled they are by adultery. I just find the saga of mistresses intriguing.

I think it's strictly talking from a football standpoint.

Albert Pujols is also an outspoken Christian and does tons of charitable things. He has a child that has Down's Syndrome that he took in that his wife had from a previous relationship. He is one of the most glorified athletes in sports. And it's because he is darn good.

There is no debate that Tebow has jacked up throwing mechanics and struggled to complete 50% of his passes against a crappy Dolphins team. Regardless of his beliefs. There is also no debate that his playing style could very well get him hurt and shorten his career.
