Rutgers value to the B1G is tens of millions. It’s got nothing to do with deserve. We were a great business decision for the conference.
After the JMU segway into ranting about Rutgers and Schiano's salary, I cut the conversation short. Like many other things in life, people make up their minds based upon narratives, rumors, and half-assed "facts," and it can be difficult to change their minds. The narrative that Rutgers does not belong in the B1G is a fairly common narrative.
That is/was the generalized perception of many people around the country and actually amongst many Rutgers alums, professors and several upper level administrators .Rutgers and the state needs to help change the presumed narrative of “ they don’t belong.” Say what they may but this guy Schiano has always been the biggest believer in not only Rutgers but his home state. Can’t say too many others have felt stronger about our school. We belong in the B1G… it is time to step it up even more in the years ahead.
I'm curious about the two states where that is not the case. Could they be Alaska and Vermont?

Let them move to any other B1G market and see how the perception /importance of B1G football is totally different than in New Jersey.
Rutgers' reputation gets better and better the farther you get from NJ. When I first got to RU, a professor asked everyone in the class why they chose to attend Rutgers. A guy from California said that he thought Rutgers was an Ivy League school.
Honestly, many NJ residents, especially those in rich "bubble" suburbs , are the most uninformed jerks about RU. Also , many need to justify pissing away hundreds of thousands sending their kids out of state for the wrong reasons.
It's actually more than 2. It's like 6 or 7. Small states like Maine and New Hampshire. The others all have their state football coach as the highest paid. Basketball is second highest in those states.
Lol nothing like burning six figures to send your kid to an overrated state school like Delaware or some meh academic school like UCF or a random liberal arts school in New England. When I have kids, I'd give them a deal where if they go to RU in state, I'd financially support them to wherever they want to go for grad school. If they want to go OOS for college and it's not justifiable like a Michigan or a UNC for example or a school like Vandy or NW, they're on their own for grad school financially.
We have a similar deal with our daughter
Absent of a crazy $ scholarship, or admittance into Ivy’s or public ivy’s, there’s no crazy oos random expensive school undergrad tutition getting paid just because she doesn’t want to stay in state
This is the time to sell the dream of having a premier college football and basketball program very near these corporate entities.
Prior to NIL, the idea that Rutgers could rise to that level was a very hard sell requiring FAITH. But NOW? "If you build it, they will come" means if you build the best NIL collective, from corporate interests in our region, then the talent will come and so will the wins.
Keep in mind.. plenty of big-name programs have gotten the talent and then still had problems winning from time to time.. so there are no guarantees.. BUT.. there has never been a better time for Rutgers to sell that vision.
Then pair that with building corporate boxes on the west side and maybe over the south end zone and in rebuilding the RAC... because to get the big money you'll need to provide seats to the big in-demand games... anyway, have that in place and you are selling the vision of those corporations getting premium access to big events as well as the public relations bonus of supporting the state university as its fan base swells along with its success.
You do all that.. and the alums will compete for access as well. Alums have gotten us to this point.. which was never a given when you look at so many eastern and northeastern universities.

Here's a target list.... keep in mind, lots of employees is fine.. but if they are a brand that sells consumer products too.. that's a bonus. If they have a big footprint in Big Ten land.. which is national now.. bonus. If they are close enough to New Brunswick.. another bonus. If they can benefit from Rutgers research.. more bonus. Go get em!

I think that is what happens at all the brand name programs. But teh "corporations" are smaller.. more local.. ranches, farms, family businesses in the fly-over states... whose members attended their state u. I sometimes wonder if tax dollars... like farm subsidies, etc.. end up being donated to programs and how often stuff like that happens. Politicians maybe filter contracts from DC to their districts to companies that will support their state U programs... I know NJ pols don't really bring home the bacon.. their votes are used for national goals of the party and to make sure the party supports them and doesn't get them "primaried".
The funny thing is that so many fans from other states that look at Rutgers/B1G/Coaches Salary - they ask why and how are we paying him so little?
Only in NJ does everyone bring up the highest paid state employee ****.
And fans elsewhere- actually pull for us to do something in the B1G.
It is for this reason I am willing to bet the NIL salaries for elite, college, basketball players will skyrocket compared to football players.
To a certain extent, you're seeing schools already do this, but I can't verify if it's NIL related or not.
Wake and Vandy - two schools who have no shot at ever winning anything in football yet gladly cash SEC & ACC checks respectively, are all in on baseball. They are two powerhouse programs who should be good for years to come

I've encountered it too many times,
a few years ago I got into with a guy at a party and we are still very icy towards each other. I dont care. F' him and his anti-RU bias. any angle I took he spun it in an anti-RU way. he was literally impossible to talk to. now I just disengage when I encounter people like him.
generally I really cant stand people who only see black-and-white and only speak from the perspective of their chosen agenda. they dont care to engage in real conversation. its why I go on the warpath a bit when I see it on here (e.g., those people who posts ONLY consist of criticizing Schiano or Pike and all their posts go towards supporting their position). those people arent here to chat - they just wait for their opportunities to pound their agendas and twist everything people say that contradicts their position.

I'm not sure the school will think like this as those funds are most likely already spent or earmarked for other projects
It's utterly dumb how the school doesn't market itself. Every HS guidance counselor in Jersey should be getting some sort of marketing material every year highlighting RU's strong points.
furthermore the ad spots we get during televised games are weak. I do not know what they are intended to do but they do not make it look like New Jersey is lucky to have Rutgers or that college applicants should be interested in Rutgers. It does not fight against any existing negative perceptions.. like urban ugly campus, commuter school... etc.
I really don't know how they come up with these ad spots... might as well be UCONN's "great pick" or Appalachian State is hot, hot hot (which was corny but made the place look good). I'm sure someone was selected to make those ads and they probably got a nice check to do so.. but, damn, they suck. Don't we have a school of communications?
