before getting my hopes up. Expectations have been burned in the past in basketball and this football season hasn't helped my optimism either. But with that being said, we looked good yesterday at the scrimmage. There really is tons of talent.<div id="isChromeWebToolbarDiv" style="display:none"></div><div>
</div><div>Deville Smith is going to contribute immediately. Obviously, we all know he is talented but yesterday was my first time to see him play and he is the real deal. Made tons of shots. Bost beat him a few times on defense but that's against one of the better point guards in the league. Stansbury wasn't kidding when he talked about Bryan Bryant's improvement. He looked infinitely better than last year. I didn't like him on the court last year but he looked much more confident and pretty smooth when he had the ball and when taking shots.</div><div>
</div><div>Wendell has only gotten better. He is going to be a solid contributor. I liked what I saw from him yesterday, especially because I don't want to buy into all the Moultrie hype till he is in game situations. He didn't do anything bad yesterday but really didn't stand out. Sidney was the same as usual. Made some outstanding shots but still has some conditioning to do, which is painful to say. Really wish the European could play this year because he could be a solid contributor. Those are all positives and hopefully this team will come together and we'll play like we should.</div>

I just do not understand what makes so many people think this. I don't even see us making the tournament at all. Somebody convince me otherwise with facts.

first of all, let me state that I am not one who makes excuses for the Texas and Butler tournament flops. However, I am fully confident that had we not drawn Xavier, we would've made our run. Xavier was just caught absolute fire at the right time that year. We did nothing wrong against them, and still got blown out. Anyway, my question is this - how different would your opinion be of Stansbury if we were on the opposite side of the bracket that year and had lost in the Elite 8? How much did that one game change?</p>

one of the most talented freshman we've had in while and a legitimate back up PG to allow us to let Bost play some 2 ( or at least take the pressure of him bringing the ball up).

We are solid in the post. The only thing we seem to lack is a 3 point game, but I think fewer 3's will be a welcomed changed.

is this team is so good even stansbury can't screw it up... i ain't buying it

if we come out with a rotation that should be our rotation against sec teams, then that is a step in the right direction.
I don't expect much and I don't expect stansbury here after march.

and put us away...The Recruiter has had 6 trips to the NCAA's, and not once have we ever "caught fire"....<div>
</div><div>Anybody that is not a Stans apologist will tell you a coach's legacy in college basketball is defined by the NCAA Tourney. I linked an article a couple of days ago with a reporter saying the exact same thing about Stallings- who is catching heat even with a couple of Sweet 16's on his resume....at some point, he simply has to get it done- and if he cant with this group he has this season- he is not ever going to- he wont have this much talent at one time ever again. This is his shot.</div><div>
</div><div>I hope we make the f'ing Final Four- I just dont have faith in him that we will</div>

Stans is just not that good of a coach. He can not scout and beat teams he does not play year in and year out. He really has problems beating two teams in two days if they are not SEC teams he has seen play before.

The only way we have success in the NCAA tourney this year will be because we have so much talent on the team, that even Stans can't screw that up... Talent wins games, but bad coaching can loss them...

Sweet 16 or Bust......

close game with a chance to advance and The Recruiter makes the fatal mistake he always does:<div>
</div><div>let the other team dictate tempo, switch defenses for no apparent reason, a bad stretch of offense without using a time-out to get a good shot or he actually does take a time-out, but we turn it over when the other team changes defenses coming out of the time-out....</div><div>

but all of those things happen to every team at some point or another. Hell I've seen him switch defenses and create a turnover after a timeout just as often as the reverse has happened to him.

coaching ability?
We play a bunch of SEC teams home and away. Obviously it is easier to win at home, but my hypothesis is that we seem to do better against teams a second time around.
My beef is that we often have the talent to win, but inferior in-game decision making keeps us from winning these close games. Given sufficient study of film, calling other coaching friends, practice, adjustments in schemes, we often beat these teams the second time we play them.
Is is possible to crunch numbers and compare Wvs L1st and 2nd times we face teams and do that across the league for the past 5 yrs for all coaches/teams. Without seeing the data, I suspect MSU wins more games the second go around than do other teams......total guess there.
An alternative way to view this is that Stans takes a lesser bunch of talent and with a loss the first time around, makes theright adjustments to allow us to beat a better team the second time around? Maybe he is a star? Guess it kind of depends on your perspective there.
An example of this was 2 yrs ago we play Florida and their big guykicked Jarvis's skinny @ss. They did it all game and that guy went off in the win. For whatever reason we couldn't adjust in game, but the second time we played FLA that year, the second that guy touched the ball Kodi dropped down into a double team and that guy was held to virtually no points on the game. MSU victory. Good for us forat least making theadjustment and getting thewin, but bad on us for not doing it the first game.

you didn't even answer the question. the statement was assume we made the elite 8, then answer the question.

and like i said, i agree in terms of the texas, butler, duke, Memphis, etc. games. But Xavier was different. Anybody who follows NCAAB knows that. They weren't even on the radar going into the A-10 tournament, then they stormed through it like it was nothing and beat the #2 team in the country by 40 in the finals. Their hot play continued all the way through the tournament until Duke finally beat them. And, yes, coaching was the difference with Duke, but that's Coach K. Nobody is going to compare Stans and K. But Xavier wasn't just hot against us, they were freaking on fire for a three or four week stretch. I mean, the sons of bitches drained a 3/4 court shot at the 1st half buzzer. It was crazy.

That 2004 team was so good, that Stans really couldn't screw it up either, and he didn't. Xavier did. My question was would that sweet 16 or elite 8 appearance have changed your mind about him at all? the answer is probably "no", and that's fair, but at least it's ananswer. That seems to be your only measuring stick, so i was just curious. It wouldn't change one thing about his coaching ability, but that seems to be the only thing you are willing to measure him by.

I've said it since 1999- it became internet legend in December of 2003- "a Rick Stansbury coached team will never make a Sweet 16"<div>

even for Stans to screw up. I agree DS, the debate at the end of the season, did our W's and L's = talent level. Ready for that one in the spring

We'll know before Dec 1st most likely. Certainly a long time before SEC play starts.

Maybe bythe end of the forth or fifth game. I agree there is a lot of talent available to put on the floor this year.

Be interesting to see if we can make it through the exhibition season without a fight on the floor, bench or bleachers between our guys.

Anyone wanna take bets?
