I think Mullen did his best coaching job since he's been at State this past Saturday.

He made a couple of questionable calls, but nothing too terrible. It seems like we always run trick plays, but we really don't, they just never ever come close to working for us and that's in player execution. The last trick play we ran was prolly against UGA last year when Perk threw a pick. Not going for it on 4th and 1 wasn't that bad of a call considering DePasquale is one of the most accurate under 45yd FGs State's ever had in recent memory, he just missed the kick. In a close game when points are not going to be plentiful, I like the odds of going for the FG. The only major problem I had is Banks not on Alshon at the end of the game. Mullen acknowledged that was a terrible match up they got and that is 100% on the head coach. You must tell Banks, wherever Alshon is, you better be there too, don't worry about anything else, and instead we had a 5-10 corner back on a 6-4 future NFL star. I'm not taking a shot at Broomfield either he's a good player, it's just a bad match up. Anyway, Throwing the ball down fielddefinitelyworked for us. I think Malcom Johnson was amatch upwe took advantage of and I think he's a good SEC receiver.<div id="isChromeWebToolbarDiv" style="display:none"></div>

Depasquale has to hit the 40 yarder (and he's not that accurate under 45 yards.) He had no business trying from 53, and Alshon was catching the jump ball on anyone that was covering him.</p>

You dont run a reverse pass when conventional offense is working.

You dont fail to put in the qb AT ALLwho raised expectations.

You dont fail to get the ball continually to the tallest wr's.

You dont fail to get the ball to Perkins on as many pass plays as you can.

You NEVER say that the outcome of the game was because the defense, WHO WAS THE REASON YOU WERE IN THE GAME, failed to execute on a damn near perfect pass play.

You dont fail to acknowlege your own mistakes in decisions, namely field goals 5 yards beyond your kickers leg when you have a DIFFERENT guy who kicks off.

Mullen showed a weakness that he'd better correct. That is to say he needs to start learning to shoulder blame or he'll be Nutt 15 years from now.

Still have no clue as to why he wanted to kick a 53 yd FG with a kicker who weighs 120lbs soaking wet and has yet to prove he is reliable... You either go for it or punt it and pin them deep and let your D, who has played extremely well, keep the field position...

I wonder when people will finally jump off the Relf bandwagon and realize he's been offensively impotent since Auburn.
As far as Mullen goes, we should never have asked Depag to kick those two field goals. On 4th and 1, you grow a sack and go for it.
Nobody could have stopped Alshon Jeffries from catching that pass. Sorry. We don't have any 6'10" defenders with banana fingers and arms that drag the ground.

I don't think you completely abandon Relf... Yes he hasn't been great since the Auburn game, but the O-Line has been horrific and our WR's don't have a clue what they are doing out there... they can't catch or block... I do think Russell is the man right now, but Relf should have some packages for him...

Nope, I don't trust Relf anymore. He still can't hit a pass more than ten yards down field. He holds the ball way too long. He doesn't run with any passion any more. He looks as apathetic as he possibly can out there now.

You're right... but remember, his passing success last year came from our running game be so dominant... Our O-Line was way better last year and our WR's didn't seem to drop everything thrown at them

Relf is a run first QB... but with our O-Line injuries he's had to try to be more of a passer... His carries are down (as are Ballard's and Perkins') and his pass attempts are up

And his two misses came in the last two games. He's not the greatest kicker in the world, but he's been pretty damn accurate from close range this season.

I already covered this in another thread. In the drive that included the reverse to Favre, State had just converted two 3rd downs after throwing incomplete passes on first down. In fact, in the series before the trick play, Russell threw two incompletions and on 3rd and 10 threw a short out to Clark who then ran upfield for a 17 yard gain and a first down.

Russell got pummeled on that play and had to sit to catch his breath.

That was actually the perfect moment to try a trick play. The offense was sporadic, but had finally gotten inside the USC 40. Russell needed a breather. The only thing wrong with that play was that by putting Favre at receiver and Bumphis at QB, it kind of alerted the defense to look for something tricky.

9 of 11 isn't Really that accurate. Especially a miss from 32 at UAB. Maybe our definitions of accurate differ.

Yes, he has struggled the last two games, but he is still one of the most accurate kickers in school history. By the way, for those who think Hazlewood was such a great kicker, his career FG percentage was 59%. Worse than Adam Carlson. Everyone just remembers his 5-5 field goals against Arkansas in 1998 and thinks he was awesome.

...was the worst sequence in the game. Except for 1st & 10 from the Arkansas 4.<div>
</div><div>From midfield, we run 3 times and punt instead of being aggressive to at least get in field goal range. We punted into the endzone and Arkansas drives 80 yards to ti the game. 7-7 instead of 10-0 or 14-0.</div><div>
</div><div>I thought the playcalling was about as good as the team was in general - pretty good, but had just enough miscues not to win the game.</div>

Prior to the USC game, DePasquale was 8/9 from 42 yards and shorter. That's 89%, and his only miss was the wind blown attempt at UAB.

Morten Andersen, who is widely considered one of the most accurate NFL FG kickers of all time, hit 93% of his FGs from 40 yards in.

Granted, DePasquale went 1 for 2 in the USC game, so now his average is 82%, but at the time Mullen was deciding to kick that 40 yarder, his average was 89%.

I'm not saying he's a good kicker. I hold my breath and pray every time he steps on the field. But those prayers have been answered this season at a resepctable clip. You really cannot get away with saying he "isn't all that accurate."

Lost a good opportunity with mo on our side. But run the ball 3 straight times? Poor poor play calling there. Not bad over all, just enough bad ones to help lose the game.

I'm not saying that we should have run a flea flicker or anything, but I know we have a small bag of plays to use in critical situations like that where we absolutely have to get a first down. That was one of those games where you knew that you were only going to get a handful of opportunities to score, and we blew all but one of them. I count the FG as a blown one because there's no excuse to be kicking one when you have a 1st and goal at the 4 with two NFL size QBs on your team. I would have been happier if we had bulldozed forward 4 straight times without getting in than I was when we didn't even pick up a yard and ended up kicking.

However, instead of being up two scores on them, we run it up the gut three times and punt and they methodically drive back down and tie the game.

A reverse to Favre, who lined up as a receiver, with a pass back to the QB.
