If Beamer hopes to remain HC at SC, he must…

Make a home-run hire this time around (his 4th try) at OC. Someone like a Buster Faulkner from Ga. Tech. If he gets another NFL retread, I believe he’ll be gone by the end of 2026. He’s got to bring some excitement to the offense, or he’s going to lose players, recruits, and fan support.

It depends on your definition of home run. A home run for me is simply a guy who actually has collegiate OC experience and has demonstrated competence in that field. We are looking to take the step from the bottom rung of the ladder towards the middle rung. Maybe at some point in our program's future, we'll be looking to step up to finding elite assistants, but that's not what we need right now, and that's not attainable anyway.

And, yes, absolutely needs to avoid NFL flameouts. Really, should avoid NFL guys altogether. It simply hasn't worked. Running a pro style offense does not necessitate having an OC who has coached in the NFL. Few college OCs who run pro style offenses very successfully have any connection to the NFL. Beamer seems to be locked in on this notion that to have a pro style offense you've got to have an OC with NFL experience.

It is a sad comment on Shane's hiring that this is your (and my) definition of a homerun hire this time around.

Right? It is where we are though. On the one hand, it's a sad state of affairs that we are shooting for competence. On the other, there's no lack of attainable college OCs out there who have demonstrated competence, so I think this is fairly low hanging fruit for us.

It will be a fatal error if Beamer holds off on the OC search in order to evaluate in-house candidates. IMO, every member of this offensive staff is guilty by association. No unit has stood out. Maybe that's not fair, but it's the way it goes. In-house is NOT the way to go. There's not a single coach on this offensive staff who I think should be given 5 minutes of consideration. None of them have any OC experience within the last 11 years. We need someone who is currently a college OC. Now, if Beamer wants to say the standard line that the interim OC will be given a fair shot to earn the job WHILE he's looking the actually OC externally, that's fine. But this can't be a "wait until the end of the season and evaluate it" scenario.

The fact this will be his 4th OC in 5 seasons doesn't give a lot of reason for optimism.

I 100% agree about the GA Tech guy. With a QB like sellers we could likely be undefeated right now if we had been running that offense. Sellers is much more athletic than King and could make enough throws to get us by

Got to be a home-run hire or the unemployment line! Time will prove this true. We shall see.

prepare to be underwhelmed.. he's going to hire whoever he thinks can get it done. not someone off fan's wish list or whoever the "hot" name is. It just doesn't work that way here.

King is a much better QB than Sellers.
