The reason I ask this question, is that the West region looks like it will be overly stacked. If Richmond goes west, it would especially true. Both MaxPreps and Carolina Preps has as their top 5 teams, Richmond, Mallard Creek, Vance, West Forsyth and Myers Park. They have them in different positions, but those teams are in the top 5 in either ranking.
To me, this is a legitimate question to ask. If Richmond does go west and Vance remains in 4AA, then we'd have the top 5 ranked teams in the state in the same region. By the time one of these teams made it to the state title game, yes, they'd be battle tested, but what else would have resulted from that run? Increased risk of injury, being worn down, to name a possible few.
Anytime you have playoffs a team needs to guard against having a bad game or a couple of quarters. Looking at the teams that would most likely be in the east with this scenario, a team could have a bad quarter or half and possibly bounce back from it. In the west one bad quarter and the team could be done. With 16-17 year olds, it can often be challenge to have them solidly concentrate every single quarter for one game, let alone 4 or 5.
You'd think the NCHSAA would want, if at all possible, the greatest likelihood of the top two teams in the state being represented in a showcase event such as the state title game. Looking at the rankings of the teams, that wouldn't happen this year with the current format.
Many of you guys have much more knowledge and understanding of these things than I do. I'd like to hear your thoughts are on it.
