So the only legal casinos in SC are based on ships? https://www.casinos.us/south-carolina/#map

I thought sure there must be an Indian casino in the state. Like in the Catawba area.

The tribe claimed the territory extended, conveniently, just accross the NC state line, magically.
They are building the permament building now for the Two Kings Casino in Kings Mountain NC.
Its been operating out of trailers for a couple of years now.

I remember being on jury duty back when poker machines were legal and the "got hooked poker machines" defense was the most common ploy of defense attorneys the week I served. True or not in those cases, society was only enhanced by banning poker machines.
I didn't vote in the poll becaue I no longer live in S.C., but I remember when you couldn't go into a C-store without a corner of the place devoted to video gaming. It was a blight on the state and I was glad to see it go away.

Gambling is fine for those who want to participate. It needs to be in places that are for that purpose only, not co-mingled in public spaces that otherwise aren't suitable for it.

Very valid point. All the lights and jingling sounds in public places make it beguiling to young people who shouldn't even be thinking about gambling for money.

I mean, I played marbles for keeps out in the yard, but that symbolism didn't incline me toward gambling and I never became a gambler. Video poker in front of me all the time when I was that age might have had a different effect, especially if I had spent hours waiting on my daddy while he sat on a stool feeding quarters.

Yeah, it feels like it’s time. People are already finding ways to gamble, legalizing it would just make it safer, bring in tax revenue, and create jobs. As long as it’s well-regulated, it could be a win for South Carolina.

I used to play the pinball games (no flippers) back in the 70's that paid off. Remember those?

If they legalize gambling, it should be restricted to casinos or buildings that are only used for gambling. When video poker was legal, having to negotiate the machines in every convenience store with losers perched on stools for hours at a time was aggravating as hell.

Those people were too stupid to realize the owner of the machine could set the payout at whatever they wanted. They set the payouts high to start with to convince the morons they had figured out how to win and then they set them to pay out 75-80%. Video poker was free money for store owners.

Why? So people can lose everything they’ve got in the blink of an eye?

Honestly, I don’t see why not. It’s 2025, people are gonna gamble whether it’s legal or not. Might as well make it safe, regulated, and let the state actually benefit from it instead of pushing it underground.

The only reason not to is to keep sleazy casinos from popping up all over the state. When video poker was legal, little converted convenience stores full of video poker machines were everywhere and they were full of losers sitting on stools in front of a screen for hours blowing their paychecks. Casinos are a lot like the lottery. They are a tax on people who don't understand math.

It's not underground in any way now. The internet has made gambling available to everyone, no matter what your state laws are.

Yep, 3 miles offshore is international waters in SC.

I had a client in Florence that had a flea bag hotel, along with trailer parks, coin laundry and carwashes. This was over 25 years ago when video poker was legal. Florence was in a growth spurt and construction workers would do weekly rentals. He put 2 or 3 poker machines in the lobby by the ice machine and the vending machines and the construction guys would play when they got off work. It was so successful that he bought an old gas station and lined the walls with poker machines. He could control how much the machines would pay out - 1 week he would payout, the next week he would get it all back plus whatever they wasted trying to "win it all back". He wasn't happy when Gov Beasley outlawed them.

Lot of people I know made a lot of money on video poker. I will spend everything I have on machines if I knew it was coming back.

Yes! at Myrtle Beach. Vegas at the Ocean. We'd pay no income tax, and our roads would be newly paved.

For several portions of SC, it’s as easy as driving a few min up the road to NC and you can place any online sports bet you want. I live in GVL and do it regularly.
