He was something special.

When you think of #32 that’s who comes to mind first for me.

Jim Brown is considered one of the greatest running backs in NFL history. But Rutgers never played Syracuse while Brown played on the varsity from 1954-56. However, Brown was an All-American in two different sports. The June 8, 1957 New York Times reported, “Jim Brown of Syracuse and Jack Daut of Rutgers scored five quick goals between them in about six minutes tonight to start the North on its way to a 14-10 lacrosse victory over the South.” The all star game was held at Johns Hopkins University.

And an All American lacrosse player. Brown was quoted more than once saying that if the money was the same he would have played lacrosse.

Dick Schapp had a great quote. He played goalie for Cornell and faced a Brown Syracuse team as a freshman.

"Brown took 6 shots. 4 went in and two missed the net. I saw none of them."

RIP

great actor as well.
Really … Great actor? Jim Brown was a great athlete and player in several sports but great actor ? Isn’t that pushing the envelope? Probably you misspoke . Don’t want to upset the Jim Brown Hollywood fanbase but he was not a great actor. Brown was a controversial celebrity who made some movies with other actors of note.

He was before my day as a football player but I was bummed when he got killed-off in Dirty Dozen.
Not sure I agree he is still best RB in history but was certainly near the top.
I've been following him on socials for awhile and he hasn't been healthy the last years.
Brown was not out of a cookie cutter and thats not true of many pros these days

Now both of the stars of 100 Rifles have gone to the big cinema in the sky with Raquel passing in March.
As an all around football player,Paul Hornung could give him a battle. So too could Bobby Bell.

Pretty decent lacrosse player at Cuse as well. I had the good fortune to see him in person once at Yankee Stadium and the Sam Huff led defense held him in check in a Giants rout. He got a measly 50 yards and no scores. His career numbers against the Giants- in 14 games, 1225 yards on 244 carries and 11 TDs (9 rushing).

He's no OJ
Are you saying he did not try hard enough?
He was a wonderful person - especially when he wasn't beating up women
or trying to kill them.
Did not realize his history until reading his Wikipedia page. But many of the charges against him were dropped after his alleged victim refused to testify or cooperate.

"In 1965, Brown was arrested in his hotel room for assault and battery against an 18-year-old named Brenda Ayres; he was later acquitted of those charges.[57] A year later, he fought paternity allegations that he fathered Brenda Ayres' child.[61]

In 1968, Brown was charged with assault with intent to commit murder after model Eva Bohn-Chin was found beneath the balcony of Brown's second-floor apartment.[62] The charges were later dismissed after Bohn-Chin refused to cooperate with the prosecutor's office. Brown was also ordered to pay a $300 fine for striking a deputy sheriff involved in the investigation during the incident. In Brown's autobiography, he stated that Bohn-Chin was angry and jealous over an affair he had been having with Gloria Steinem, and this argument is what led to the "misunderstanding with the police".[63]

In 1970, Brown was found not guilty of assault and battery, the charges stemming from a road-rage incident that had occurred in 1969.[64]

In December 1973, Brown proposed to 18-year-old Diane Stanley, a Clark College student he met in Acapulco, Mexico, in April of that year.[65][66] They broke off their engagement in 1974.[67]

In 1975, Brown was convicted of misdemeanor battery for beating and choking his golfing partner, Frank Snow. He was sentenced to one day in jail, two years' probation, and a fine of $500.[68][69]

In 1985, Brown was charged with raping a 33-year-old woman.[70] The charges were later dismissed.[71]

In 1986, Brown was arrested for assaulting his fiancée Debra Clark.[72] Clark refused to press charges, though, and Brown was released.[73]

Brown married his second wife, Monique, in 1997; they have two children.[74] In 1999, Brown was arrested and charged with making terroristic threats toward his wife. Later that year, he was found guilty of vandalism for smashing his wife's car with a shovel.[75] He was sentenced to three years' probation, one year of domestic violence counseling, and 400 hours of community service or 40 hours on a work crew along with a $1,800 fine.[76] Brown ignored the terms of his sentence and in 2000 was sentenced to six months in jail, which he began serving in 2002 after refusing the court-ordered counseling and community service.[77] He was released after three months.[78][79]"

He was the only 1st team All American in 2 sports. Decent? Lol. They changed the rules of Lacrosse because he was so dominant.

Wow. I didn’t realize that history.

Sadly, a history of alleged rape and sexual does not preclude you from being revered by the public. Hell, you can even run for president and get support of 47% of America.

Yeah, amazing Bill Clinton was elected twice with such a history. The privileged and the elite get a pass though.

It appears there are some posters who do not recall Jim Brown’s problems with women not one or two but multiple numbers of women. Ray Rice on the other hand who is still married to his wife ( first and only) was castigated by his own Rutgers fanbase, school and people who knew this was so uncharacteristic of Rice. Here it needs to be stated , as great as Brown was on the playing field or a hit movie he was not a nice guy regardless. But it is not surprising that he is so beloved by Rutgers sports board experts. Thank You Knight Shift for an accurate and actually documented listing of Jim Brown. RIP Mr. Brown

I'm sure you know the saying that where there is smoke there is fire. But with Jim Brown, from the incidents listed, there was a lot of smoke, but fire was only proven once. Depending on how one looks at these sorts of situations, two conclusions could be (1) he was a magnet for women who falsely accused him of bad behavior and he only lost his temper and was proven wrong once; or (2) he convinced his accusers to not press charges/testify and/or he go favorable treatment because of his celebrity.

I don't know enough about the incidents and don't care enough to dig in to draw a conclusion. But it's a wonderful country if you are rich, connected, adored, and/or privileged.

Great football player but certainly not an All American Boy. Always seemed to me to be very surly.
Thing I didn't like about his play was that he wouldn't block.
On the other hand his contemporary great running back Jim Taylor was a ferocious blocker for his running mate Paul Horning. And Horning was a fine blocker as well for Taylor. Their blocking was one of the things helped make the Packer sweep so effective.
When those guards pulled & the back came also--Look Out.

There are many things some younger RU fans don’t know about or actually care about. Most do but many were never exposed to the negatives of specific players. Much went into those protections back then. Remember Ray Rice… he deserved punishment but was abandoned by many at Dear Ol’Rutgers… This kid was a saint when you compare their lives as people. It ‘s not even debatable.

Most he was made was 80k in final season.
Back in Brown's day players still had to work jobs in the off-season (some during the season)
Brown had a job as a Pepsi rep.
Defensive players in Brown's day were considered second class athletes to offensive players - bar bouncers in sports.
That's a reason I cant say he's best RB ever compared to guys like Barry Sanders and Walter Payton.
250lb LBs have been running 4.4s a long time now
3x All Pro DT Alex Karrass was 6'2" 248 in Brown's playing days.
OJ was probably better than Brown
But Brown is still top 12 for career yards

OJ Simpson another example of mistaken identity regarding women but fawned over by sports fans even as the day is old. Entitled players who fans support and feel they need to show their allegiance to.
