It is being reported in the Lincoln Times-News that Lincolnton's Head Coach, Ledford Gibson, is stepping down for personal reasons. Cole Sigmon will fill in in the interim until a new vacancy is filled.

Talent is here but we have gotten lazy and spoiled with having guys over the years who didn't have to do extra work to be great. Feeder youth team went away for a couple years so kids had to go play at North or East and some even go to Stanley, Boger City Steelers are finally back this season and we have a couple former players who were pretty good down there coaching. Middle School program has never been great but we have always had solid coaching and it has been WAY down the past couple years, were starting to get some guys to come back to help with that and recruit the halls a little more. Biggest thing is just making football a priority amongst the kids. A couple groups of kids didn't have the Steelers to play for or didn't play in middle school so they don't know what the standards are when you put on that black and gold. If we get the youth level, middle school, and high school programs back on the same page we will be just fine.

LTown has been down since 2015, talent or loosing talent in the area? Just curious not trying to flame.
Lincolnton was not down in 2016 when they lost in Western 2A Regional Final....they had a heck of a team.......................

And while I'm on here I want to say thank you to Coach Gibson for putting in the time and effort that he has while not only being the head coach but for the years he served as defensive coordinator as well. He is well liked amongst players and has done a lot for kids over the years. Hate that it didn't work out but it is what it is.

They played us in 2015 in the finals but I didn’t remember them playing in 2016 in the 2a finals. Thanks

Thanks Rambbq, FB Capitol and OC. This year and last year have been bad for us. You’re correct about 2015 and 2016. We went 12-3 and 13-2 respectively, and lost out in the regionals to Shelby and Reidsville who would both go on to win the title.
It’s happened before, we’ll get things straightened out.
Thanks Coach Gibson, for all your time and effort you put into the Lincolnton program and what you’ve done for the people of Lincolnton. Football means a lot to us.
Coach Gibson is only the fourth Lincolnton head coach in the past sixty years.

Lots of tradition for the Wolves nation. Good luck to coach Gibson and good luck to my Lincolnton friends going forward with the football program.

Thank you guys for the kind words about our program. It’s been a rough year for the Wolves. Not just losing, but poor attitudes in the stands and on the sidelines. Things will get better. I wish the best for Coach Gibson and his family. I wish he could stay and coach the defense, like he did before, because he’s a great defensive coach. But I’m sure that isn’t in his or the school’s plans.

I wish the best but it looks like a few year to bring it back. You guys graduate a lot and low turn out on jv. But then again a new coach getting thing exciting again can recruit the halls...and might get your athletes back on field.

Good luck. We’ve been there!

Just out of curiosity, who would my fellow wolves like to see get the job?

I can put up with a few bad years here and there. I mean Coach Harris, Coach Smith and Coach Cloninger all had them. I remember reading that Coach Smith one year wanted to name his dog "Ofer" after a really bad season. That still really cracks me up. I don't have a preference except to see someone getting the program excited and challenging again playing after Thanksgiving. Also, we got to bring back the Bell!

Seriously tho, looks like the field is wide open.

For my two cents, I'd like to see a young guy who can relate to players while maintaining discipline. A guy who understands and celebrates tradition and can motivate athletes and the fan base, who sees this job as a place he can settle in and invest in a community and it's sons for the next decade and a half. The guy doesn't have to be an insider, but he's gotta appreciate Black and Gold. The fellow doesn't have to win every game, but he's gotta put a team on the field that refuses to lose, and battles for the pride and respect of 110 years of Wolves. lt would be most helpful if he also appreciates the goodness of a well-marinated City Lunch hot dog, loves a good Wolf howl, keeps parents off of the sidelines, and is never seen in public wearing blue, orange or red...

Got someone in mind?

BTW, I'm proud of the job Coach Gibson did for almost 20 years on our sidelines, and wish him the very best of futures.

Go Wolves!

Coach Helms ha ha. Maybe he’s had a change in attitude. He has had much success werever he goes as far as winning except maybe at West Charlotte and Hickory. Didn’t have much to work with at East Burke but Freedom was a differ story. If he has willing athletes he can make things happen. If I’m not mistaken he did a couple years at West Lincoln so he’s no stranger to Lincolnton. I dunno, just a guess. Don’t know if he’s coaching now but a program like Lincolnton would be mouth watering to him.

West Charlotte was a one year thing for him. Hostile environment and at the time if WC didn’t have above .500 year they’d had his head. Like I said if he had athletes he’d make things happen and WC wasn’t short of athletes by no means lol but some coaches just don’t click with some schools and vice verse.

If it were up to me theres a certain coach in Catawba County I would give a call to and try to get back. On the other site someone floated the idea of bringing Propst back and possibly giving Byus a call. I just want someone that understands the tradition and makes our kids not only great football players but great men as well.

Hearing that we should have a new coach in place within the next few weeks hopefully. Debate going on whether or not to stay inside or finally go outside... word has it there is an outsider that very well may get it. If that coach is offered the job I say it's a home run hire..

Outside guy is coming this way. Just his choice on where he goes. Ltown or EG.

Any updates on a new coach as of yet?
Hearing that they have a couple more interviews to do but it's pretty much down to two. Both are not on the current staff but one is a Lincolnton grad. A lot of people are hesitant to finally really go outside but there is a lot of support for it as well. Torn.

Here’s a perspective. In 55 years, Thomasville had three head coaches. The second one played for and coached under the first. The third played for, coached under, and was the son of the second. Virtually all of the assistants in most of those years played for the first or second, or both. It was very much a family affair with great success.
Eventually, it became necessary to consider whether to hire from within the “family” and perhaps settle for a less talented coach, or to go outside. It took two shots in the foot before we hit the jackpot. While Coach Robertson isn’t from the Thomasville family, he grew up in one that must be first cousins.
His talent, leadership, work ethic and character are from the same gene pool.
As a casual fan of Lincolnton’s program, my hope is that you find someone who embodies those same characteristics while maintaining the tradition of a proud and successful program. Sometimes you have to bring in new blood to strengthen the bloodline.
Best of luck to the Wolves!

OC, I agree with your take and perspective on things given your experiences with hiring outside. I must say that the outside candidate that is being considered is a really good one and I believe he would thrive not only on the field but within the Lincolnton community as well. The Lincolnton grad is a very good coach as well and is well respected by many around here. In my opinion if we land either one of them we will have hit a home run. While some are reluctant to go outside I believe it would do our program some good to take that next step forward. But on another note I'm looking forward to seeing what Robertson and the boys do this season. Seems he has the dawgs heading in the right direction.
