Geographically...Houston makes sense, but not financially. As has been discussed in so much of this expansion talk the reason to expand is to gain new markets. Houston doesn't fit for the same reasons that Clemson, Florida State and Georgia Tech would never get into the SEC...those markets are covered already and the way the TV contracts are written they wouldn't produce any additional revenue. The Big 12 already has plenty of feet in the Houston/Texas market so I doubt it would want any more.Houston is a lock. Also gives them an outside chance to keep Herman if the join Big 12
It’s just a matter of time until the Big 12 implodes. We are moving towards four 16 team conferences within the next five years. The Big 12 doesn’t have any marquee teams to add to their conference at this point. All they are doing is filling slots. The Big 12 doesn’t have a network, nor is there any long term plans to add one. Oklahoma wanted conference expansion but hey wanted Florida State and/or Clemson. With the new ACC GOR (good through 2036), that’s not happening. At this point the SEC needs to add 2 (to get to 16), the B1G needs to add 2, the PAC 12 needs to add 4, and the ACC needs to add 2.
With the ACC GOR, I think another round of expansion is imminent. It’s just a matter of time until the SEC and the B1G make their move on Oklahoma. Of late it sounds like Oklahoma would move to the B1G along with Kansas. I’ve heard Notre Dame and Texas would probably join the ACC at that time. That would leave OSU, TCU and Baylor without a home. If the SEC doesn’t get Oklahoma and OSU, then they would get two of the three from OSU, TCU and Baylor. The PAC 12 would wind up with the one team that’s left, probably Baylor, and would add Texas Tech, Houston and Boise State. From what I’ve heard, Iowa State and Kansas State will be left out of expansion.
What’s interesting is that when the SEC expands, it will be from schools west of the Mississippi River. A couple of years ago everyone thought that it would come from the north, with either NC State or Virginia Tech. With the monetary penalties associated with the new ACC GOR, there is no way any school will be leaving the ACC now until after 2036. That means that SEC expansion will probably come from Texas and Oklahoma, which will push Alabama and Auburn into the SEC East.

Probably true re Big 12. I know that the teams mentioned above as possible additions hardly quicken the pulse. I'd like to see the SEC take Oklahoma State and Oklahoma and let the others die on the vine.
Big 12 is a joke. Oklahoma wants out and if they leave it's done. That said, I don't see it being around for 5 more years. The Longhorn Network killed that conference
This is the Big 12 last stand. Thanks to the failing Longhorn Network that divided the league, there is nothing left to leverage. Add the embarrassment of the Baylor issue and the Big 12 will be forced to divide their top teams between the Pac 12 and the SEC.According to ESPN they polled B12 coaches and they favored adding BYU & Houston.
.
Houston & BYU 5 votes
Cinn & Memphis 4 votes
Colorado St and UCF 1 vote each
Agree that the Longhorn Network is hurting the conference
You seem to forget the old Southwest Conference was all Texas schools plus Arkansas.insiders seem to think Memphis is a done deal. and Houston makes no sense as it would elevate another Texas program to then do battle for all the instate recruits. Not something an Oklahoma or Oky State would like.
I'd say the race is between Cincy & BYU for the other expansion slot.
Yep.....Texas is the gift that keeps on giving. Poison pill and conference killer that drives good members to other leagues. Think about it....Texas was responsible for the Big 12 losing aTm and Nebraska. Unbelievable! Whatever conference takes Texas in....the existing conference members will have to make it abundantly clear....the "big me...little you" game is over. If I had a say in the SEC....I wouldn't touch the longhorns. UT is failed flagship athletic program many times over. Longhorns need to get in line or join your conference of 1.Big 12 is a joke. Texas and Kansas to the SEC or the Big 10, OU and OKU to the SEC or Big 10. The schools remaining plus the ones mentioned for expansion form the newest Power 5 conference. Texas folds the Longhorn Network into the SEC network and rekindles the A&M rivalry. Kansas strengthens the Kansas City market and renews their long, historic rivalry with Missouri. The SEC Network becomes stronger in Texas markets, plus Kansas City and St. Louis. Kansas strengthens basketball in the SEC.I have been of the opinion since the machinations around West Virginia gaining entry and our being shutout of the Big XII that Texas has used their outsized leverage within the Big XII merely to buy time. They ultimately saw Notre Dame as the perfect model for themselves--Independent in Football but perhaps with the Longhorn network conceivably independent in select sports as well and controlling all of their television inventory through the network. The difference as I see it is the Longhorn network is going to hamstring them when the Big XII GOR exhausts and conference shuffling resumes; the Pac 12 won't take them, the Big Ten won't take them without some concession of the Longhorn network into the Big Ten network and I think a big pin was kicked out from them with the ACC network announcement this week. The ACC may someday give them "the Notre Dame" deal, but Notre Dame has proven to be a very accommodating partner with the ACC thus far. The Texas/Notre Dame split 15th/16th teams into the ACC was a rumor as far back as ten years ago even before Syracuse and Pitt entered into the ACC and Maryland bolted for the Big Ten. I think Texas has painted themselves into a corner where they have lost some bargaining leverage when that time comes. And it's coming for the Big XII.
The SEC will never take Kansas because they suck at football. Football drives the bus and I would guess they would go after OU and/or OSU.Texas and Kansas to the SEC or the Big 10, OU and OKU to the SEC or Big 10. Yes, but they would bolster basketball that the SEC desperately wants to elevate in stature. And, don't forget they are 30 minutes from Kansas City and would bolster ratings. Fun to speculate. The SEC will never take Kansas because they suck at football. Football drives the bus and I would guess they would go after OU and/or OSU.
Fact: 60% of the Houston sports market watches the SEC network. Here ya go.... Cincinnati pair with WVA, Houston, no brainer large TV market, BYU, national brand, and.... Boise State, a name that causes people to tune in.

Nothing wrong with your speculation J just don't think the SEC cares what happens in basketball. I know a few years ago when it looked like the Big 12 might fold not one power 5 conference showed any interest in Kansas. It was speculated that they may end up in the WAC.
ESPN pays Texas $18 million per year for the Longhorn Network, and is losing money doing it. There is lots of incentive for Texas to bolt to the best available conference. Perhaps that is the source of urgency, all of a sudden, for Big 12 expansion.
If the rumors are true......
A conference, which was one of the best sports conferences in the country only 10-15 years ago, has since lost:
Nebraska
Texas A&M
Colorado
Missouri
and looks to be adding:
West Virginia
Houston
Cincinnati
TCU
Connecticut
BYU
Wow. Well done, Texas. You really came out ahead on that deal!
What a shitshow.
