Yep... It's a damn shame Trump has to run that mouth all the time. It bites him in the *** quite a bit. I mean, if you want to go after an individual that is never going to agree or vote with you, that's fine, have at it. But Trump just blasts everyone in the Democratic party on the regular and it doesn't serve him well at times like these when just a few people make the difference between success and failure.

Everyone here knows how I feel about Trump, and I certainly don't agree with him on his healthcare/tax break stance or making himself richer while in the Whitehouse. But to be honest, I'm kind of impressed with what he's managed to get done so far, especially on the tariffs.

I think he's opened a new chapter in American politics. So, you know when the next Democrat is in power, they can do the same thing. For example, Trump sees the 14th amendment as applying to former slaves and doesn't include illegals or foreign nationals. Fair enough. If someone like Newsome gets elected, I'm guessing there's nothing stopping him from saying that the 2nd amendment means State Militias/National Guard and not individual gun owners. Then gun control folks can do whatever they want.

Or if Hannity says something he doesn't like... threaten to remove Fox's broadcasting license unless they suspend him.
A load of snarky bs. Lol!!!

replublicans voted to fund the government. dems did not (except maybe fetterman and one other one?).

the shut down is the fault of dems.

Oh well, Trump now gets to trim a lot of fat. This will be a good thing.
What, is Cheeto going on a diet?

by the way, just to be bipartisan, the Democrats say the Vance statement is "a damned lie".

So once again, who do you believe? Take your pick

By the way, historically most members seldom read what's in the bills before they vote. So it's entirely possible that members of both parties are making statements based on what they have been told and not what they read. So, everyone speaking out might be right, or they may all be wrong

Notwithstanding all of that, if democrats say there is no intent to demand healthcare for undocumented migrants and republicans say they won't fund the same, the solution seems relatively straightforward. Bear and I could solve this in a half hour

Dear Ned,
To answer your question on being well informed. Please take a moment and read the section in the legislation Schumer is demanding to be added to the clean resolution.

I don’t have the exact line item , but you may find it on line as the House Speaker had it called up and viewed on National News where it clearly said the 1.5 trillion if not more would be put back into law for illegal immigrants.

There is no question. Democrats want illegal immigrants given funding over Americans.

I read it earlier.

based on how vehemently some of the senators are referring to republicans calling this out, I'd vote that they haven't read it. Based on the verbiage, there's little doubt that they are asking to have that portion of the BBB rescinded.

I don't know how they argue the point

While maga focuses on fear porn, why aren't you concerned about the tens of millions of Americans whose ACA premiums are about to rise by 75%? Talk about that!?

the premium rise is a by product of a bad system. The ACA was built on a lot of premises that made little sense. And if we compare results against promises, you might even call it a failure. Democrats shoved this through without Republican input. And, Republican refused to play, so they bear at least 50% of the blame.

Now that we can see the problems, we should be able to move down the learning curve and come up with a system that covers more people at affordable prices that doesn't backrupt the medical industry. However, our leaders - both parties - are so busy talking past each other that getting reasonable people to the table is practically impossible.

I just heard an ad for Medishare. They talk of their program that can save individuals $500/month. Anybody a participant in thar?

Very open to seeing the Republican healthcare plan. Would think they could learn from the efforts of the ACA. But it feels like they either just can't do it, or enjoy running on healthcare or something and like blaming ACA. Which, is fine for a certain amount of time, but at some point, if you haven't proposed an alternative, you are complicit.

When Obamacare first came out, Republicans demonized it and added 100 amendments to it so it no longer resembled the original proposal, but we still had the mandate for those that could afford it, which I supported. Then Trump came along and destroyed half of what was left as he has an anti-Obama fetish and an anti-healthcare fetish. And since we know Republicans won't come up with anything that helps the majority of Americans, this is all we've got to help those who need coverage now. What an insult to allow their premiums to go up by 75% without anything to replace it - and that's why the Democrats picked this fight, because it is necessary for tens of millions of people who are on the brink of losing their healthcare altogether now.

Feels like a pretty easy thing to negotiate and go ahead and approve the subsidies, but not the other things Democrats want.

Democrats can say they got something, Republicans can say they've continued their immigration policy (and honestly, most would run on the continuation of the subsidies that help a lot of their voters as well).

Would be somewhat of a win-win.

Leaving me with the opinion the GOP wanted this shutdown to further its agenda and use it to cut other things.

Dear Ned
I recently had two of my children go through divorces. There was a mantra we use. in reference to my children we would say We just don’t think like your EXs think. The divorces were really for different reasons , but the now laughable point (was not funny in the moment) after having to learn about cause and effect you become enlightened.

Hopefully you are understanding what I am saying.

It’s like the 6 blind men feeling different parts of the elephant and then having to describe what they felt.

People do the same with ideology positions. I am a strong law and order proponent, fiscally responsible America first soul but with charity and empathy for fellow humans.

That comes with a disclaimer. You cannot pauper one’s self to pauper everyone.

Communism and Socialism does that. The priority of Americans should be first to take care if Americans and then on the extra we create help folks around the world. I could create a long winded explanation here, but point is a great country will have it ‘s success bleed into other countries.

You read the legislation. I doubt a single poster on here did except you and I. The whole anti Trump and MAGA discussion are generally wild ranting that one investigates finds that it is a pile of fabrication.

Just sharing thoughts. Its funny that the exact same CR was passed 13 times with Republican bi-partisan support under Biden, but now is toxic unless the 1.5 trillion illegal immigrant money is put in. My opinion is shut it down and start cutting government. No problem for me.

As a note I am feeling that based on the present situation with Coach Dabo and along with the present incivility, angst and caustic behavior I am wasting time and money on being on here.

Thinking about going cold turkey as I am asking myself the mantra of what advantage is there to being FAT. I ask myself What advantage is there to being on TI and doing OFF TOPICS

Just a thought.

Carry on LOL

trump provided one during his first term. I don't believe it had democrat input (like the ACA and republicans) and I don't believe it got any democrat votes (like republicans on the ACA)

The ACA is a bad bill. Back during one of the democrat presidential debates, there was a question about the ACA asked, and ALL the candidates said they would change it. So I look at that, and I look at republicans efforts to change it and think,"wow, leaders of both parties want to change the ACA. They'll work together and come up with a better plan" NOT. You can't get democrats and republicans together on just about anything.

Your first thought went to "when republicans come up with a bill" and I understand that...it's the environment we live it. It would have been better to think, IMO, when can we get both parties together to come up with a better plan. But we don't think like that anymore. It's more about we can't give Obama a "win" or we can't give Trump a "win". And all we do is hand the American public a "loss". How does that make sense. There was a time when leaders of both parties worked together for the betterment of the country.

Since about 2011 there have been debates about the ACA, the supreme court invalidated a key element with the 100% coverage mandate (you have to have it) and that was the beginning of the end. But, as I said, the bill was bad from the beginning. You can't add 41 million people to a system and expect better, cheaper care without increasing the supply of medical facilities or personnel. (unless you assume that the existing facilities are operating under capacity and medical personnel are only working about 75% of the time). In the same way, you can't make more medical services mandatory and expect the health insurance costs for individuals to decrease...not unless you can change the basic "law" of supply and demand.

We won't be able to solve the shortcomings of the ACA if we don't admit there are shortcomings, and as I pointed out even democrat presidential candidates knew there were shortcomings. If I'm trump, I wouldn't waste my time on another bill unless both democrat and republican leaders agreed to support the effort in a bipartisan way. Why waste time if you can't get any democrat votes - can't get past the filibuster.

I wouldn't jump off if I were you. IMO you have offered some pretty rational responses and insights on what's going on in our world. You're civil and don't get involved in all the name calling.

I taught an "effective communications" course, college level, back in my working days. I taught it and I learned a lot. In short, all of us interpret what we read or hear through our built in filters. Filters we learn in our households, what we hear from others, watch on tv etc. So it leads to my expression "where you sit determines what you see" . So,1 0 people can see exactly the same thing at exactly the same time and you'd normally get maybe 6, 7 or even more different statements on what each saw.

I'll use @UrHuckleberry as an example. Now, he comes across as rational, but he leans left. That's not a negative. He see the shutdown and believes it's caused by the Republicans...and he's not alone, lots of people do. Now I'm a moderate, (that's not a negative either) worked congress for my company, know how the game is played from the inside, and I believe the whole shutdown is a game. But I see that just about every Republican has voted to pass the bill and so far only 3, I believe, democrats have. So in my mind, if all republicans have voted for it, how can it be republicans who are "voting" to shut down the government?

So two people see the same thing and come to different conclusions (obviously I'm right, it's my post) but that doesn't mean huckleberry is a bad guy, and it doesn't mean I am either. But we both want the government reopened, so we have a common ground and there must be a way to compromise.

IMO, there are only couple of posters on here who are totally intractable and are not worth replying to. The rest just have different opinions and it's valuable, IMO, to debate - rationally - defending your position and listening to opposite opinions of others. I've learned some things where I had the wrong interpretation, so in my mind that makes the board valuable.

So long winded way of saying "don't go". Use the ignore button for those posters who make your blood boil.

Not really, it was during the 1st trump administration, the bill passed the house, went to the Senate and John McCain ceremoniously cast the deciding vote to defeat it. I'm sure if you Google it there must be information out there somewhere .

Yes, please share the plan. Because what John McCain voted against was repealing Obamacare with absolutely no plan to replace it.

That is my whole point. Republicans have never shared a plan. If you can find one other than repealing ACA, I am open to being wrong.

Email your State Federal Senator

I think he might be able to send you a link in the actual legislative bill

It can be wordy and confusing so be prepared to read 1000’s of words and needing an interpreter to figure out the obfuscation

One issue I am having is my home desktop computer does not like this new On3
a lot and I have been only able to use a phone

If I had the big computer I would dig that out and send a link

Maybe one day it will work

They actually had one authored by Tom Price in his first term, which Trump repeatedly said was great until numerous critics and pundits called it terrible, which led Trump to call it terrible too, LOL. Right, but it never reached a vote, correct?

All I remember was them trying to repeal it with absolutely no plan to replace it, and then Trump saying the healthcare plan was 2 weeks out, about 7 years ago.

It failed for the same reason their policies receive so much criticism now. Tens of millions would lose insurance and Medicaid would be gutted.

AI Overview

No, the American Health Care Act (AHCA) did not pass the Senate; it passed the House of Representatives in May 2017 but was never enacted into law because it failed to pass the Senate. After the House vote, Senate Republicans introduced their own version of the bill, the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA), which also failed to pass the Senate in July 2017.

Key Events
  • May 4, 2017: The House of Representatives passed the AHCA.

  • June 22, 2017: Senate Republicans released their own bill, the BCRA.

  • July 27, 2017: The Senate rejected the BCRA, and a subsequent vote on a pared-down repeal also failed.
Why it failed
  • The AHCA bill faced significant opposition from both parties due to concerns about its potential impact on health coverage and costs, particularly for vulnerable populations.

  • Senate Republicans were divided, with some wanting more complete repeal and others concerned about the impact on specific provisions.

  • Senate leadership was unable to get the necessary votes for passage.

I remember when Pubs did this same thing in 2018 and 2011.

sounds like coup talk. This is what someone doing a coup sounds like.
want another opinion? Right now we are years behind in providing due process hearings for migrants waiting for asylum decisions. One of the reasons, in addition to the large number of people waiting, is the shortage of immigration judges. So trump brings in and trains members of the military Judge Advocate Corps to serve as immigration judges.. speeds the process. Isn't that good for both those awaiting hearings and the country at large.

Don't see a coup from a group of lawyers
