A big thank you for all you have done for Crest High School and North Carolina high school football. Head on down to Sumter and win you another one.

I agree 100 %. I hate to see Mark go but am very grateful Crest High fortunate enough to have him as head coach for the last 5 years.

Good luck at Sumter, Mark.

The only thing he is going to get in Sumter in SC HS football is heartache...ultimately.
Unless he really needed the money, he was a fool to leave a perfect setup in Cabbage Stew City.

Different world down there. He won't have twice as much talent as everyone else he plays. Sumter, though a fine school with great tradition, hasn't been playing with the big boys the last 10-15 years. Goose Creek, Summerville, Dutch Fork etc....will be hard to get out of there healthy and with all those Ws in your pocket b/w regular season and playoffs.

Can't blame him for going, because it's a whole lot bigger deal but it won't be a cakewalk.

Coach Barnes posted a 63-13 win/loss record while at Crest. South Point was credited with 9 of those losses while Johnny Roscoe account for the remaining 4.

I could no longer even hate Crest w/ Barns at the helm, good coach and class personified.

Barnes was hands down one of the best coaches Crest has ever had...he deserved more than just one ring. With that being said, too many times did I hear ignorant fans calling for his head. It would almost be justice if our next hire at Crest was a joke. I don't want it to happen, but would be as close to justice as we could get. True justice would be to ban those so called "fans" for life from ever stepping foot inside the ranch again.

I don't know if Barnes read this or not...but thanks.

Thanks for pulling us out of those awful Kirby years and showing the entire fan base that we could still win after being told to get off the bus...Barnes single handily changed the entire Crest football program. He saved it.

Nothing people say or do suprises me any more it was an everyday thing for people to tell me how stupid I was for bitching about Kirby and how he was great and how if I could do better I needed to come to the horse shoe club meeting and tell him my thoughts it was comical!

But then Barnes comes in and takes pretty much the same team and improves leaps and bounds in my book Barnes and Stewart were 1A and 1B this is the 2nd great one we have lost and the first time we puked in our lap with the replacement this time it needs to be done right!

Dutch Fork has only been playing with the big boys since Knotts came to town. Give Barnes a couple of years with 3k to draw from he should be fine.

Barnes was a class act and has been very good for the Crest program. He made a good decision that many NC HS coaches have to make late in their career. It is truly a shame that this situation exist where these guys can only stay in NC by giving up future financial security for themselves and their family. Wish him well at Sumter and look forward to getting back to thumping Crest in 2015.

Dutch Fork beat Sumter in the state title game in 2013. The HC at Sumter took that job for one of the "high" paying HC jobs going to Irmo. Not all of SC pays the big bucks that some do but Sumter pays more than Crest. The key is Coach Barnes will make more pay, less non football work, and get his $40k state retirement. If NC would let coaches double dip after 30 he would have been coming back.

NASF---- I wouldn't be quoting Coach Barnes salary (or as you said what he's making) on a message board especially NOT knowing the facts. You're not close. But no, cant blame him for looking out for his family.

Entirely different story if you know how DF has formed in recent years (10-12 years) and who the backers of the school, and players are. They have unusual setup of a better gene pool there with money behind it and an extremely good HS coach.Hopefully you are not comparing Knotts and Chucky Barnes....because that would be a very bad example to use.

I witnessed Barnes go out of his way to show good sportsmanship to a young player after a game from an opposing team. IMO...He is truly a throw back to the in your face, show you up, sportscenter world of sports that we live in today even at the high school level. Best of luck to him at Sumter.

That's REAL easy to do when you're winning 80% plus of your games.

I much prefer old school coaches in most ways including the anti-ESPN type....but he'll get to show that sportsmanship for either wins or losses now that the competition he plays will be more in line with what he trots out on the field most nights.

Correct. That coach has hit 30 years. Win games consistently, get a title or two, have a lot of respect, get 30 years in the system, and look for something in SC.

I expect to see several coaches over the next few years with really good resumes look to go to SC when they hit 30 years in NC. Makes sense.

Great question, rulz. To the north of us pay is great (Va). To the south of us pay is great (SC, Ga, Fla). The supplements in NC are a joke compared to what a good Coach gives back to our kids. Shake a NC coaches hand and thank him the next time you have an opportunity. No one should ever fault a NC Coach for moving to where his pay more closely matches his worth.

Education as a whole and teachers specifically are undervalued in NC in my humble opinion.

A few years ago in Stanly County the BOE was looking for ways to cut costs. One jack *** on the board stated cut all coaching supplements to zero. He said that the coaches should do it for love of the sport and kids not money. Considering they were under paying on supplements already it was another slap in the face. He went onto make it worse by saying community volunteers could do the job if need be. Really!?!

Florida does not pay coaches great, pays them good but not like is seen in many areas of SC and GA. Some areas of SC pay coaches much better than others. What often comes into play is that a head football coach may also get a much better schedule in some states or areas than others. Imagine making $100k plus a year as HFC/AD. Assistant AD has last two period free and paid a good supplement. There is also a full time athletic department secretary. Leaves a lot of time to work on football.

You can coach at some places where there is one high school, school board slurps over sports, and the pay supplement is not dictated like a Wake County or Mecklenburg school board. Sometimes the pay for an assistant football coach is drastically higher than any of the head coaches in the state.
Its rare but believe me it can be true.

Its even worse for high time consuming and high paperwork sports like wrestling. Comes out to about $4.00 an hour or less. You either do it for the love of it or because you are too stupid to realize you make less than a paperboy 35 years ago.
Bartender would be a better part time job and you could work on getting laid every night. Now that's benefits.

I hate to see Barnes go. Although I don't know him, he seems to be a class coach and was definitely good for Crest and the Crest-SP rivalry. It will be interesting to see how Crest reacts next year with a new coach.

I would hope that Coach Barnes had some input as to his successor. My hope is the new Head Coach will come from the current staff. This staff has put together 5 years of extremely good football. Why mess it up by bringing in a HC from outside that could possibly bring in a new system and his own people. (Remember the final 2 Kirby years with the Chase coaches?)

The old saying applies here:

IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT!

Good luck to coach Barnes. I was blessed to have been able to work with him a short time when I was starting out. Class act.
