The season starts next week, and it should be a dandy up in ledger. With some high powered offense returning (and coming in), a strong line returning, and probably the best kicking game in 1a, the Mountaineers will be a tough out for anyone. The core of linebackers will be a little green, but should still be tough. I wouldn't be surprised to see them go undefeated in non conference play, leading up to the big rivalry game in October. With Murphy and Robbinsville flexing their own muscles this year (what's new?), the Mountaineers still have to get over the proverbial SMC hump. Can they do it this year, or will they be yet again, that tough test for the state champs?

Mitchell has 3 WR's over 6-1, 4 rb's that average 6-0 170lbs, The OL/DL average 6-2 245. 3 TE's over 6-1 and 190lbs. They have the size, and the strength, with great individual speed and good overall team speed. Our kicker can boom in 45 yarders no problem, and every KO is a guaranteed touchback.
I wasnt trying to start another East Surry or MICS thread, just posting facts. Not trying to thump chest or strut like a rooster, everyone else has posted what their team is bringing to the table, just thought I'd post Mitchell's too. The west has went thru Ledger multiple times the last few years, and we all know what happened.

I don't get why some people (not you Mountie) want to act like Mitchell are perpetual chokers because they haven't sealed the deal and won a title yet, I don't buy that.
Yes, Mitchell has made deep runs the last four years but the fact of the matter is the only year that Mitchell was the favorite on paper out of the last four playoff games they lost was in 2017 against Cherokee. Mitchell were the most complete team in small 1A that year imo, they just couldn't contain a great athlete in Mintz. In 2015 WRH were clearly better, in 2016 Murphy were clearly better. Last year Murphy were better and never should've had to go to Ledger in the first place, but Maxpreps thought otherwise and it almost cost Murphy a title.
Ledger is a really tough place to play, great homefield advantage. If Murphy has to go up there again its going to be extremely difficult. And unlike last year, this season Mitchell is in fact the favorite in small 1A with all that they bring back and with what Murphy lost to graduation.

My post wasn’t meant to be a slight against Mitchell at all, I was agreeing with what you said, on paper Mitchell is the team to beat.
I don’t know what your problem is 95 but if 95 is the year you graduated from Murphy you are a little young to be spouting off at the mouth about Murphy football, much less the rest of the smc
It will be an interesting year. I think the Mitchell schedule should be a little stronger this year than the past few. Erwin is Erwin, at Franklin is always tough, the game that was going to be Cannon is now Carbarrus Stallions which is a combination of 3 schools so they should be better. McDowell is a 4a school with a new coach and even though they have been dreadful the past few season a 1a school should never beat a school with 4 times the number of students. Polk and Owen should be much improved over the past few seasons as well. Avery, Madison and East Hendo are question marks. And then there is Heritage which could and should decide the WHC again.

As with most 1a programs injures at most any position could derail what looks to be a promising season. Looking forward to seeing how it all plays out. But in the west 1a (if Mitchell and Murphy remain small) at this time I would say:
1. Murphy- Until they get beaten in the playoffs #1 belongs to them
2a. Mitchell
2b. Robbinsville
4. Thomas Jefferson
5. Elkin
Just don't see a lot of separation in the top 3. As Murphy's line will be the best in 1a. Robbinsville has the best backs and I think Mitchell has the best Qb and single Wr. I have always heard as goes the line goes the game so at this point I look at Murphy on top. Best I recall all 3 teams are replacing their linebackers. (Could be wrong on Robbinsville, if so I apologize).

Mitchell-most complete team (tentatively speaking)
I know that Mitchell and Murphy are replacing their core of linebackers, pretty sure rville is too, so that's moot. Hard to judge Robbinsville, all their fans want to talk about is Anderson, and the Great Murphy Conspiracy.

For his size Anderson is still the hardest runner I have seen in years. If he was 3 inches taller and weighed 30 more lbs he would be unstoppable.

Anybody with a fast defense should be able to stop Mitchell's offense. It takes to long for their run plays to get started.
