Myson Johnson-Cook, with a current NIL valuation of $123,000, has offers to play football at the most revered and deep-pocketed universities in the nation and they we be getting a pristine product with very little wear and tear. So far this year, he has carried just 62 times in 10 games, for 830 yards and 13 TDs. As a sophomore in Texas, he ran the ball 88 times for 911 yards and 14 scores.

Football certainly has not impacted MJC (6.1-5/220) on the track where he has recorded a personal best (wind-legal) time of 10.45 seconds in the 100-meter dash. He has also posted faster, but wind-aided, times of 10.30, 10.33, and 10.42 seconds.

If he remains healthy and productive, I wonder what that NIL number will be in 13 months.

What ever that number is, the Illini need to bring a bag to keep him instate. It’s very unlikely but that is a position that Illinois needs to upgrade and will have their two instate back graduating by the time he would arrive.
What’s crazy is Illinois could have the Warren running back if he tries to double up with wrestling and he gets that many attempts in a game and a half.

Hes a great HS running back but hes def not a p5/b10 rb if you are looking for a #1 guy.

he's referring to aaron stewart, the warren rb and illinois wrestling/football double prospect, that silver helmet mentioned
I was just trying to point out how crazy it is that one probably had over 200 carries this season and the other will likely have less than 200 in 2 years. Stewart likely will never wear pads for the Illini with his future in wrestling.

I think he will end up going on all in with wrestling at some point. Extremely difficult sports to compete in at a high level like the Big Ten. You don't see many Football players/Wrestlers in the Big Ten.
I think that point should be very early in his college career.

An absolute stud wrestler, preferred walk on for football. He'll never see the football field.
If this is a D1 program he can’t get a scholarship for wrestling and walk on for football since football is a head count sport. Football would have to carry the scholarship. He could walk on for both however.

I'm almost certain that's not true. That would mean one of the best wrestlers in the country is going to pay his way to wrestle at UIUC or Bret Beliema isn't aware of who is getting a scholarship in his fb program.

JHA as football is a headcount sport, football must carry the bag on its headcount. It doesn’t mean he can’t wrestle and the school can’t be creative with NIL etc… but as far as the NCAA is concerned if he’s on the football team his headcount goes to football not wrestling with equivalency scholarships. Surprised he’s going to wrestle for the Illini if he’s a top guy in the US as they are not “that” destination for that level talent. Congrats to the Illini if they landed him!

Don't think this is true either. He's listed as a commit for wrestling, but not on the U of I list for class of 2026 commits for football.

That's not what that means. Anyone who receives a fb scholarship is counted as "1" towards their 85 no matter if they get a full ride or partial. Prior to the rule change for example, baseball had 11.7 and they could divide them up however they wanted. 5, 10, 20, etc could get partial rides as long as it didn't exceed 11.7.

In your scenario, either the HFC doesn't know his scholarship situation or the best wrestler in the country is turning down full rides to pay his way at Illinois. Neither if those sound logical.

And btw, Stewart's parents went to UI and his sister is there now.

Per the House Settlement the headcount (football) vs. equivalency (wrestling) are over. All sports are equivalency. Prior to the House settlement, Football was limited to 85 full scholarships, no longer. What changed is that D1 Football now has a roster limit of 105 and can offer partial scholarships.

"Another key change to the scholarship structure: All sports will be considered “equivalency sports,” meaning partial scholarships can be distributed to players. Football, basketball and other sports are currently considered “head-count sports,” which require players on scholarship to receive a full grant." https://sports.yahoo.com/sources-nc...ng-roster-limit-of-105-players-164300598.html
Anon, 4A, and JHA,

First I need to apologize. And to continue…

Thanks for the link, the yahoo page was giving me headaches so I went to the NCAA and I am wrong(more or less) this change started with the 25-26 recruiting cycle. It looks like schools at the D1 level are now only limited by Roster size as prescribed for each sport by the NCAA and the institutions ability to fund a budget to cover the costs. So football can scholarship up to 105 players in full(total cost of attendance) or partial scholarship, plus revenue share up to $20.5MM(195k per athlete) amongst those 105 players in addition to their cost of attendance. Seems this change has also resulted in the removal of the guaranteed scholarship to degree completion or 5 years unless dismissed from the team for cause.

I’m unsure if I like this change because it feels like college athletics is rapidly evolving to the pro level. While I personally think it’s not a good change with the evolving NIL landscape it was probably inevitable.

I think this may give more opportunities for kids to play sports like baseball. It will also prevent fb programs from being "over the limit" in scholarships but able to grab 2 or 3 transfers from the portal, package enough NIL money to cover tuition, etc. and just call them walk ons

My fear with FB and the portal is without the scholarship guarantee in place any longer you could be cut for someone in the portal at a snap of the fingers. It’s back to the wild Wild West!
