"The proposal would create two, 72-hour early signing periods beginning on the last Wednesday in June and in mid-December."

The June signing period would be great for us. Help cut out players in changing their minds if they sign on the dotted line. Plus they would not be influenced by a disappointing season and they likely really want to be here. The December one would be totally affected by the season, for better or for worse. Also would get to account for coaches getting fired.

Meyer, Saban, Harbaugh & other superpower coaches/programs will once again get any proposed early signing period killed, watch & see. They hate the idea of schools like Kentucky identifying talent & then getting them locked down, unable to be stolen away come Dec/Jan when the power schools need to fill out their classes. The power schools all battle for the same top 20 players, when they turn down Alabama/Ohio State/Michigan/Texas then alternative bodies must be found - commits at lower level schools.

something tells me they might eventually get the Dec period, despite the opposition from the usual suspects.

The bottom line is if a kid wants to sign with a school, and the school wants to take him, why have a rule that prevents that? It's stupid and political IMO.

This is long overdue. I could never understand why early signing was OK for basketball and not football. I think early signing for football makes more sense and would actually save money for the programs. If you get a signature on the dotted line early you don't have to spend as much time on the player and can budget more time for players left unsigned. Carrying it to February is crazy if you can go ahead and sign a few early.

I agree, sign them early then put resources all in on the remaining needs. I think if it is passed you will see less early commitments and more recruits waiting till the last moment to sign.

I have noticed one good thing about this staff is that they can identify talent early, sometimes even before they blow up on major camp circuits.

That is the same thought I had. Sign the kids early and they are less able to change their minds.

but to be fair I think provisions should be put in (probably for all sports) that if the coach who was in the job at the time you signed is fired or leaves for another job, the kid should be released from the letter if they request it

good point, I think most reasonable people would accept that condition.

I like it. I think early signing dates would add some "discipline" to the crazy-for-most-schools recruiting process, especially to this commitment game.

Hope it passes, but I highly doubt it. Too may of the top programs will be doing everything they can to see this doesn't get passed.

Totally right. Coaches like Meyer want to snag recruits from people like us when they lose a couple at the end.

Only means something to guys like Landon Young who are absolutely positive where they want to go...dosen't mean guys have to sign because they commit.

That is one reason football recruiting/commitments mean very little to me. And in reality, until a player's sophomore year, I really do not care who they are, unless they are playing a lot.

I don't know how many ex coaches have on the staff who do nothing but evaluate hs players, but Bama has 40+, including a P5 head coach, do you really think UK or anyone else is going to find a player they aren't aware of? The top kids will probably hold out for as long as they can, a Dec signing date will get some to sign, but a July date not so much, I would assume once they sign officials visits to other schools would be a no no. But it would give you a better idea what area you need to recruit hard the last month. Just takes away the most exciting day of the off season.

I don't think it is very exciting at least from our perspective. We probably know already 95% of the players that are going to sign with us in advance. We're lucky if we have 2 or 3 surprises a year. For basketball it is different. One key player announces for your school and it is a huge deal. He might make up 20% of the recruiting class. Compare that to football where one player might make up 4% of the class. So it isn't very exciting from our point of view in my opinion. Maybe for the big schools who are competing for 4 and 5 star players that wait to announce until signing day, but we get very few of those.

Its the same for us, but still exciting none the less. Very seldom do we get a big a surprise on signing day, We had 4 big recruits deciding on signing day this past year, missed on 3 of them and the 1 we got wasnt much of a secret. But yes its exciting and disappointing at the same time.

happens pretty frequently actually, a guy who is committed to UK months later gets a Bama offer late in the summer
