That's probably because we were still not at 100% share in revenue from the B12. That will change very very soon.

Were we losing more than $2M when we were in the BE? I mean we were making a hell of a lot less then and I don't remember losing this much, if any, dough. Even if we are not 100% vested with B12 we are still making a heck of a lot more $$$ than BE days. Something is very strange

This may be true but I thought the B12 helped pay part or all of our travel expenses. Also, I have a hard time believing it is $2M more.

WVU left it's NCAA tournament shares behind when it left the Big East as part of the exit agreement. I believe that the conferences receive payment based from the NCAA based upon a six year cycle of tournament appearances (shares). I don't know how this affects our basketball revenue from the Big 12 but it can't help.

It's not just travel expenses, it is a combo of things like the issue wvmountydog just mentioned. Another issue is that when WVU struggles on the court, the Athletic Department suffers at the gate as well. Our previous 2 seasons we've struggled with attendance & that is no surprise as we struggled on the court. If you look at our history, when we do well on the court, we typically average 9,000 or more. When we don't do as well (mediocre to bad), we typically average less than 9,000. And when we struggle with attendance, that affects the bottom line - donations, ticket sales, concessions, souvenirs, etc. etc. Once we are fully vested in the Big 12, this shouldn't be an issue anymore.

Top 10 in average attendance since Coliseum opened in 1970

2 years where attendance dipped -

2014 - 8,575
2013 - 8,752

The answers is in the article:

While schools are required to file numbers, how schools report the data varies greatly, depending on what they choose to attribute to a certain program. For example, a school might decide to attribute more or less TV revenue, sponsorship money or donations to the basketball team when it's not exactly clear how much came in from the program alone.

The athletic department as a whole will be very profitable going forward (thanks to B12 conference money and our contract with IMG). How that money is allocated between programs isn't really that important.

Also, I doubt that our basketball travel expenses are that high compared to other programs.

Let's look at the record

WVU never got more than $9.9 million in any year from the Big East.

The Big 12 payment will be $30 million at 100%. Even at 50% it would be $15 million, which is 50% more than it ever got from the Big East.

WVU is just moving numbers around. What counts is the actual income and expenses that can be attributed to the basketball team, including the $3 million a year that Huggins gets.

Oliver Luck got WVU in excellent financial condition.Triple income over the Big East at 100% Big 12 payout. Equal to the best Big East payout ever at 33% Big 12, which has never been that low for WVU (50% the first year, then 67%, then 80%, then 100%).

I'm not worried.

You can't take one element and extrapolate calamity or euphoria. You have to see the total picture.
