I'm just learning about this kid, Sam Ruthe, but he has apparently burst onto the scene as maybe the greatest youth middle distance runner ever.

I think this was his first ever indoor mile and he ran the 16th fastest indoor mile ever, set the under 18 world record indoor or out, broke the New Zealand national record indoor or out (they have a rich running history).

Last year he became the first 15 year old to break the 4 minute mark and a year later he's shaved off 10 seconds and done it indoors.

Anyway...

I just watched it again. Look at him after the race. He's fresh as a daisy.

He never looked out of rhythm in the slightest running 5 seconds faster than he ever had on an indoor track for the first time.

What's his ceiling?? The indoor WR is 3:45.14.

I believe the 1500 meter or something like that has generally replaced it.

Oh, I gotcha.

Yeah, not as common as it used to be. There are still traditional ones run. Like the Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games. They just ran it this weekend. Had 8 guys who had run sub 3:50. Basically all the best milers in the world except Ingebrigtsen from Norway. 4 of the fastest 20 times ever in this race alone...
