It’s always been that way since the OT rule change. First team to score a TD wins. If team with first possession scores a FG, the defending team gets the ball. If still tied and both teams had a possession, next score in any form wins. But this game may cause the competition committee revisit OT scoring and ensure both teams get one possession at least in playoff games
It’s a goofy rule for sure. Basically the coin toss can determine the outcome.

I think way back it was just the 1st team that scores in OT wins.

Then you have all these rule changes in recent years going against the defense in which you can't hit the QB anymore and the game now looks more like flag football and the NFL decided to change the OT rules.

If they didn’t change it after the Super Bowl ended the same way I doubt they would change it after this game. The rule is fine the problem was the Chiefs defense sucks and couldn’t get off the field by getting a stop on 3rd and long.

The rule is not fine. Go to the college playoff setup and end this nonsense.

I think a "First to 8" rule would be interesting. Would still give the team to possess it first a chance to end the game, but they'd at least have to convert the two point play. Then the second team would have a chance to respond if the first team only got 6 or 7, but they'd have to go for two. Could end it after 15 minutes if neither team reached 8 and one team was up. Otherwise go into sudden death.

NFL kickers are to good even if you put the ball at 50 they pick up 9 yards and they can take shot at a long fg most games would end up with 4-5 OTs and turn into a kicking contests.

We'll never see two more thrilling championship games again. I am surprised no one is talking about the Saints getting totally f*cked on the no call pass interference against Nickell Robey-Coleman late in regulation. That no call likely cost them that game. I can't stand when officials take the game out of the players' hands. Usually it's a terrible call. But I can't believe no one saw this. As an official, you have to be looking somewhere else to miss this unless you are Mr. Magoo. Maybe he was Mr. Magoo. But Magoo would have thrown the flag.

As for the Patriots and Chiefs game. I picked the Chiefs and my son picked the Pats. My son said he still didn't trust the Chiefs D. I should have known better than to pick against Tom Brady and Belichick. I won't make that mistake again. Time of possession Pats, 43:59, Chiefs 20:53. It is amazing the Chiefs got 31 points in that little time. And they all came in the second half.

Brady is still Brady, but the Pats did what you have to do in cold weather. They ran the ball right down the throats of the Chiefs and Sony Michel had just another day at the office. 113 yards on 29 carries and 1 TD. And, oh yeah, Brady threw for 348, with 2 TDs and 2 picks. Four rushing TDs for NE in that weather. The Pats ran the ball 48 times and threw 46 times. That explains the time of possession.

I saw this interesting post on twitter
.

I will still never understand how an offensive lineman can motion his whole hand forward, stand, turn, have a cup of coffee, do the Macarena and it’s not a penalty. If a DL flinches? 25 flags in the air.

Bad day indeed for the refs. How do they miss that call against the Saints when millions saw it? And even though I’m a Pats fan, that roughing the passer on Brady in the final minutes? Instant replay is killing the game. It’s only good for giving folks ten minutes to drain their Budweiser.

Anyone else bothered by one game in a tropical dome and the other in the tundra? I’d like to see some consistent conditions for the championship games. No way the Rams kicker hits that 57 yarder if it were in KC.

What, are you proposing neutral sites for the conference championship round?

I am actually against all these challenges. Let the ref make the call on the field and move on whether he or she is right or wrong. It kills the momentum and flow of the game. I only want to see instant replay in the last 2 minutes of the half or the game.

I generally agree. "in the booth" reviews that are automatic, like confirming scores, i don't mind. Its when they drag on. Part of its just the issue with football being such a stop and go game... More free flowing games allow for that on the field discretion except for the biggest events.

I think if you have the opportunity to get the call right then do so. That was so blatantly bad it’s almost a case of it has to be overturned.

A lot of real bad calls yesterday from the Rams game and the Patriots. The roughing the passer call in Brady May be one of the worst I saw all year. Huge impact on the game too

The outdoor game should have been played earlier in the day when there was some sunshine. Of course, TV is the master, here.

The New England entire coaching staff is definitely much smarter than the rest of the league. When you play them a second time they take away major assets away from you.

In the last 15 years why don't NFL teams steal more coaches from the Patriots and make.them head coaches?

There were actually two penalties that didn't get called on that play in New Orleans. Robey-Coleman was also guilty of helmet-to-helmet contact. And that is reviewable.

NFL football is meant to be played outside, period. Green Bay plays outside, so does Buffalo, NE, the Bears and several other "cold weather" teams. Minnesota used to play outside as well.

But the dome in New Orleans, as well as the others was built so the city could bid for and maybe host a Super Bowl. Although New Orleans hosted three SBs before the dome opened. But, look at the list of SB locations in the past. Look at the northern cities where it was played. Detroit, Minneapolis, Indianapolis and New York. New York was the only one of those played outside. You won't see that again.

Future Super Bowls through 2024 will be in warm cities, some in domes there.

They have and they have pretty much all sucked outside of Bill O’Brien who has been decent, unless your getting Bill Belicheck your getting nothing.

Romo was awesome yesterday. Scary when he can diagnose the play before it happens and not a single KC defensive coach could.

They have. And the results haven't been as good as the coaches poached from Andy Reid. Matt Patricia, who is the HC for the Lions, came from NE. He coached offense and defense in NE. This was his first year in Detroit.

What about that offensive line coach? He's been there 15 years and nobody hardly touches Brady.

First, cut out all officials' reviews. Only booth reviews on scoring plays. Let the coaches alone decide if they want something reviewed. The NFL should do what the NHL does when it comes to coaches' reviews.

In the NHL, coaches can challenge certain plays and calls, offside, etc. But, if an NHL coach decides to challenge a call and it isn't overturned, his team gets a 2 minute penalty for delay of game.

Make it a 15 yard penalty along with the loss of a timeout in the NFL if a coach challenges a play and it isn't overturned. That might cut down the challenges. Or give them one challenge per game.

It's convoluted at best. Stop the craziness and let the players decide on the field. The Chiefs lost because of a coin toss.
The Chiefs lost because they couldn't stop the Patriots...all game! Hello?? By the way, New Orleans won the OT coin toss and lost the game. Explain that.

Apples/oranges. I'm talking specifically about KC-NE. When they went to OT and NE won the toss I proclaimed game over based on both defenses being unable to stop a Pop Warner RB.

Of course you are talking about KC and NE because it fits your narrative. I pointed out a team that won the coin toss and lost the game and you call it apples/oranges.

You are making my argument. You said you wanted a college type OT. If that was the rule they would still be playing the game because you said both teams couldn't stop a Pop Warner RB. The score would be 300-300 now. The people who ***** about the coin toss are usually the ones whose teams got beat. Stop somebody then kick a field goal. Worked for the Rams.

Agreed I knew whoever won the coin toss would win the game. Even if KC won the coin toss I knew Mahomes would win the game.

I know this question is insignificant but just wondering what are the rules giving the Patriots the opportunity to call the OT coin flip?

You know Newt? Romo has really grown on me and I really like listening to him do games. He and Aikman are the best analysts in the game IMO.
And I loved when he reiterated the ref’s call, “the clock is correct.” Great analysis and good wit.

The road team always calls when the coin is tossed.
