Just seen this on Twitter earlier but one of the reporters out of the Charlotte CBS affiliate reported that Rowan/Salisbury schools is considering either merging or shutting down 11 different schools due to either losing money or not having enough kids (6 Elementary, 3 Middle, and 2 High schools.) He shared a powerpoint which I'm posting the link to here.

North Rowan's 1 of the high schools on the chopping block due to having very low enrollment. The school's built to handle 1,100 kids and have only 541. No idea on when the closing's gonna happen but they have a multi year plan. It's looking like they will demolish the school and put kids in different high schools as well as redistricting. Didn't say what the other high school will be though so who knows.

So sad to see.. North Rowan's always been a good program. :(

I expect if a second high school closes it is South Rowan. Redistricting county wide. Five 3A high schools about the same enrollment would be great but no idea if it happens. I bet there will be a major community upheaval over North closing.

I bet so too because a good majority of those kids would get sent to Salisbury correct?

You're going to see more and more consolidation in rural counties in the next 10 years than we have seen on quite some time due to the budget strain put forth by the legislature. But with that said this also opens the doors for more charter schools which is what the legislature wants. Parents get mad because their kids get sent to another school. They rally and boom you now have Rowan Charter.

You have to wonder where all this lottery money goes
A few years ago, the legislature cut the schools’ share from 40% to 22%. You’re right. Makes you wonder where it goes. Not to mention the education money that was “replaced” by lottery money. Shell game for political gain.

5 schools 3A size in one conference would save a great deal of money for Rowan County in athletics. Talk about slicing travel costs. And big time gates as well.

That would be an amazing conference no lie. All they would need is one more squad to finish that conference out: North Iredell perhaps?

It would be mind blowing seeing Salisbury as a 3A but their school is big enough in total size wise to be one. I guess if South goes Carson would get most of their kids right?

Yes but the county would be totally redistrict.

I have my doubts if South Rowan will close. With the growth and construction currently in Meck, Union, and Cabarrus they will eventually need the school most likely.

Makes you wonder, why did they ever waste money to create Carson in the 1st place. I dont see Landis or China Grove growing anytime soon, hell Kannapolis population is declining as we speak. True it is growth in Meck,Union and Cabarrus counties, Rowan county hasn't felt the effect. Yet.

I could see
3A
East Rowan
Montgomery Central
Carson
Salisbury
West Rowan
South Rowan

Athletically speaking, close North and Salisbury. Build a new school and combine the two. There would be about 1200 students and total domination (in the county) in every sport except baseball. I know this could never happen. The politics in Rowan would never allow the oldest school in the county to close.

No way do I see Montgomery Central going that direction. Expect them to go Tri County or Mi Piedmont. Six and seven team conferences.
