USA Today called his comments a "surprisingly candid response for a college football coach."

The only appropriate response in this scenario is: "Well, we've been fortunate to make some plays, but it's just the 2nd quarter. There's a long way to go in this one, and we've got some mistakes we need to clean up. You know they're gonna respond. Too good of a team and too many good players to think otherwise, and we better be prepared."

Embarrassing.

Admittedly, I never followed Frank Beamer or VT all that closely. But I'm pretty sure ol' Frank was more level headed than Shane has proven to be. Does Shane ever consult with his dad at all?

A&M hoped we would serve as an open date, consequently played with no focus in the first half, and got smoked because we played exceptionally focused in the first half. A&M has been demonstrably the best second half team in the country, is one of the most seasoned teams in the country, we got conservative on offense, left the middle of the field uncovered (did that in the first half as well), and A&M discovered our safties couldn't cover a crippled man. In spite of all that, we still were moving for what probably would been a game winning field goal at the end. It is justifiable to blame it on coaching idiocy and/or failure to have a plan to win after that first half, but the second half didn't have diddly to do with perceived bulletin board material, despite what any yodeling yokels post.

Nobody said it did. A lot of words that don't have anything to do with the OP.

But it sure makes the coach look like a goober when he's doing victory laps at the end of the 1st quarter.

Yes, somebody did lol.

In Beamer’s defense, given the situation at the time and a media person in his face asking a dumb question while he’s hyper focused on the game, I can forgive him for shooting from the hip. Regardless, football teams don’t just amp it up above and beyond because somebody said something.

Tell that to Beamer. He's the king of using perceived slights as motivation.

The question itself was pretty standard fare...there are no original questions from the media. Most coaches know the standard coach speak to offer in these circumstances.
